Tiie Prospects.
The campaign of 1B72 has opened.
The ball is in motion, andj our State
Candidates are now fairly and squarely
before the people. After considerable
wranslinrr the Democrats have t rutted
out their pet, and on Monday last he ap
peared before the citizens of Portland.
Mr. Wilson, the Republican Candidate,
gave him a cordial welcome, and met
his assertions in a manner that showed
that the first victory belonged to the
Republicans. Mr. Burnett is bound to
be defeated j public opinion is not in
Unison with the principles he advocate.-,
and he is doomed to send his compli
ments to Washington, by his success
ful opponent, and inform his friends
there that he has wisely determined. to
stay at homo for the next two years.
At no time since 1SGG has the pros
pects for success shone brighter than
now j the party is a unit as regards the
Representative, and in the different
counties of the State, there is little if

triumphant success of the p;rty.

Democratic Platlorm
This instrument is just what might
have been expected from such a source.
-A mass of generalities without any
specifications wild declarations with-
, out any meaning. In one breath they
declare themselves opposed to monopo-
.lies, and in the next endorse the swamp
Land Act, one of the grandest monopo
lies that was ever organized. One reso
lution opposes competition in any shape,
?and another sanctions the State Admin
istration, which as everybody knows
is run by the Salem ring full of the
vilest corruption, and given to the
deepest frauds. Taken altogether it is
'nothing but a bundle of inconsistencies.

Destruction of Timber.
We hardly pick up a paper but we
read of vast amounts of tjmber being
used up in diibrent parts of the coun
try. A recent writer says? that more
than 150,000 acres of timber are used
in the Uuited States in the manufac
ture of railroad ties alone; add to this,
SGO,000,000 worth of wood used by
these same companies, and we have
only commenced estimating the im
mense amount of timber which is being
annually used up. Rut what we whdicd
to call the attention of our residcrs more
particularly to, was the timber being
waatouly destroyed in our own State
every year, it must, ue wen kuowu iu
all, that thousands cf acres of timber
was burned last fall inour .)vn county,
and in other parts of the State some
of it the best timbered lands we had.
This, too, through the carelessness of
parties who, had they bcn a little cau
tious. might have saved this heavy loss.
The time is now near at hand when a
fire left at a camping plucu'.in the moun
tains may cost the State thousands, per
haps millions of dollars. Everybody
should be on their guard in this matter,
aud, if tUey will not be, the Legi!a.
ture should take steps to stop this whole
sale destruction of timber. Tho time
is close at hand when the timber of our
State will bo very saleable, and it shuuld !
be preserved.
May Re. A correspondent of the
Reuton Democrat gives Ren Uuydcn
the following back swipe, or left-hand
ed compliment : " 1 feel certain that I
exnress the feelings of Judge Havden
when I say that he will do trenerous -er
vice in the cause, and never cease work
ing until Mr. Rutnctt will be tlvcted
by a larger majority than ever was giv
en a Congressional Candidate, in Ore
gon, before." That's pretty. After
throwing your best man out of the third
story window of your wigwam, you de
scend the st-irs and kick him in a
good-natured way, you knew, for fall
ing Ren ain't red hot, since the Cuu
vention. lie fee's like the fellow, in
the phy, that was fold, and is ready
to cry with him, Oh, spare m, s:.re
mc this disgrace; you've 'urt my feel-
in'a.,, Cuefs Haydcn won't s:raiu a
point to secure tho election of Rutnctt.
A Coincilknck. And now cotnes
the Statesman with the folio ing :
41 Hon. Jcs. G. Wilson, amid cheer. :ind
music, arrived hy the 4.10 train.''
That's as it should ho. In another par
agraph the following appears: "John
Hurnctt came to towu yesterday on the
freight train, at noon. Nobody noticed
him until he pot to the hotel, and then
they treated him rather hhahhy." Thi.s
U as it should he siin. We rcnictuher
iu California. Jlooth was wtlcomed hy
an enthusiastic delegation, while llaight,
was compelled to wend his weary way
alone, aud arrived wet, weary, and foot
sore at hi.s hotel. The same tiling hap
pening in both tate what does it
signify ? Simply thi.s : Triumphant
victory of the Republican party of
Oregon, as the setjucl has ehowu it to
be iu California.
Ungrateful. The late Democratic
Convention showed conclusively its ut
ter ingratitude to friends of its parly,
by turning tho cold shoulder to Mr.
Haydcn of this county. There is not
a man in this State, G rover not except
cd, who has done moro for the De
mocracy than Mr. Ilayden, but for
some unaccountable reason he has never
received a nomination of any promi
nence, lie is certainly true grit or he
would have ticked in tho traces lonir
ere this. There is a point, however,
where forbearance ceases to be a virtue,
and Mr. Haydcn may come to that
point if such treatment is continued.
We have no reason to complain, how
ever, as Mr, Ilayden would have been
a harder man to beat than Mr. Bur
nett, the present nominee.
Is That So ? Humor has it that

ferent. It is talked hereabouts that

pose of securing tho bones and " sich"

' From the Statesman of Thursday.
Reed's Opera House was filled last
evening, parquette, gallery and pit,
with the people of Marion county, who
had come to hear the discussion between
Jus. O. Wilson and John Rurnctt, the
Republican aud Democratic Candidates
for Congress. A large number of ladies
graced tlia occasion v ith their presence.
It was one of the finest looking audi
ences we ever saw at a political meeting
in Oregon.
JOHN BURNETT
Opened the discusion, if his pnrt of it
could be called a di-emsion. When he
roso he was greeted with some anplauo
