Bones of Contention. Portland has her

and Polk now baa on hand that ox which the
County Court bought. It will be remembered
that the bridge across the ltickreal fell, a short

$150. Jle presented his claim to the County
Court, when they allowed him $"0 with the
understanding that tho crippled ox rras to be

question is, what will they do with it? Tho

II ig Luckiatnuto Ilridge. From a person
who has examined this bridge we learn that it
is in a horrible condition. Tho first bent is
standing at an angle of forty-fi?o degrees, the
fourth ono is entirely gone, while the fifth, or
main bunt, rests on a bed of quicksand, and
is gradually Ft filing. The main stringers are
those used in the old bridge, and it may not be
puch a wild i'ka to suppose that they rotted
somewhat during tho sixteen years they served
in tho old bridgo. We learn that this bridge
has been condemned and notices to that clT'ct
have been posted at each end, but the rains
have caused them to become indistinct and not
one person out of ten ilt bo ablo to decipher
their meaning. Probably citizens hereabout
are acquainted with the condition of this bridge
but as it is a thoroughfare whjch cattle-drovers
from all parts of ihe country are constantly
using, unless there is formidable obstructions
placed thereon, there is danger of an accident,
for before the driver could road the notices, his
cattle would be going down stream. We are
confident tho authorities will tako steps to pro
veal ftny accidents to travelers, and cause tho
bridge to be closed at each end, in lieu of the
notices already posted.
