To the 1 cues
r
At no time in the history of our State
has there been greater inducements
held out than at the present, fur our
young people to prepare themselves for
the great battle of life. To fight that
battle successfully, the one who ex
pects to win must be prepared for the
conflict. The times dea aud energetic,
stirring, high-minded men and women ;
those who are able and willing to do
and to rJaro when emergencies present
thsmselves which require promptitude
of action. As the resources of our
young State are developed uew ave
nties will be opened for the employ
rjjent of the talents of those who pos
sess them, for the progress of those who
wish for advancement. For the young,
then, it is necessary that they should be
np and doing; educating themselves
fof the work befare them, in orier to
rise as the progress and improvement of
the State, of business and of society
may require. It is but a few years
since the herding of cattle was the prin
cipal business. The dextrous use of
the whip, spur and lasso was the neces
sary accomplishments, and the yourg
man who would wield those to the best
advantage was the one who secured the
best wages and the best positions. Now
V . 1 . .
times are different, and will continue to
.
crow still more so. J he increase vt i
ocean commerce, the building of rail
TOads and etahlil.ment of tcleLTaiih i
Consequent upon these imj-rovciiient.s,
and the influx of immigration, all com
bine to make it imperative on the part
of our youth to qualify themselves for
the change which is coming upon u.,
bo that they may fill any and all posi
tions offered them, with honor aud
profit. If they do not, these places will
be filled, by persous comiug from other
States, and those negligent ones will
hare no one but themselves to hlame if
they have to be hewers of wood and
carrierof water to tho-e in high posi
tions, vhich they themselves might
bave filled had they possessed the
necessary ambition.
Another Virkbur.
Another victory granted I The re
quiein of the Xlepuhlican party had been
sung so much by so many of our would
be influential journals, tat we had al
most began to look upen it as a settled
fact that the death knell of the party
had been sounded and all lhat was hit
to do was to inter the remains. But the
very first gun brings with its echoes the
notes of victory. New Hampshire,
from a Democratic -majority of 1,500 at
her last election, has rallied again,
"thrown off her Democratic rule and now
rolls up a Ierublican majority of about
1,500. Grant's laurels, like the whisk)
he wan reported to be drinking at
VicksVurgi still brings a triumph, and
bMowb that, notwithstanding the oppo
sition of the politicians, the people still
tsbow that they know what it is for their
-interest to do. The key note is sounded
and we expect to see State after State
following in the wuke of the Granite
tate, until the welkin shall ring with
the shouts of Hepublican triumphs.
Amerieaa fcerurHIo In Jiurope,
George W. Smalley, London c'orrea'
pondent of the New York Tribune,
Mates that business circles in England
are depressed by anticipations of prob
able trouble growing out of the hitch
in the settlement of the Alabama claims.
English and, American securities have
jleclined. It ' would appear that the
- prospects of the Northern Pacific loan
arc pomewbat iuyjlvcd :
" One fact inorr over, cannot be too
clearly stated. All the American busi
ness and American enterprise which
have either their headquarters or their
agencies itt London are at a complete
stand still. A mouth ago they were
in the full tide of activity, and there
was a flow of British capi'al to America,
where much had gone before it, to build
our railways, and work our mines, aud
enrich new States. 1 need not remind
you with what brilliant success Messrs.
Jay Cooke, MeCulluch Sc Co., had en
gineered our Funded Loan, and the
Northern Pacific Loan, and what 'they
hoped to do in connection with the
Huth.-ehilds, with their gigantic joint
idler to take six millions ot the Ameri
can securities. There were scores of
American applications of every port in
London for capital. Not only Jay
Cooke, MeCulloeh & Co.. but others of
the. American financial houses newly
established in London, were doing a
prospeious buisness, and daily extend
ing their connections. The disagree
ment about the treaty has postponed
everything. Mori than one banker has
said to me that the losses already in
curred on account of this difficulty far
exceed anything we shall ever get or
hope to get on account of the Alabama
claims. This is no argument for wav
rrin any of them ; but I repeat it as
showing the practical way in which
some business men strike a balance
ehect in politics and diplomacy."
