DALLAS, SATURDAY, FEB. 1
'" A ROMAN'S ANSWIiK. .
Xo you know you have asked for the costliest
.. thing ' r v;
Ever made by the hand above?
A woman' hand and a woman's life
And a woman's womlerfnl love ? '
Do you know you have asked for .the priceless
thing,
As a child might ask for a toy ?
Demanding what others have died to win,
With the reckless dash of a boy ?
-You have written my duty out
Man-like have you questioned me,
How stand at the bar of my woman's soul,
Until I question thee !
You may require your mutton shall always bo
hot, ' '
Your socks and yonr shirts be whole :
I require your heart to be true as God's stars,
Aud pure has Heaven your soul.
You require a cook for your jnutton and beef,
' I require a far greater thing";
A seamstress you're wanting for socks and for
shirts,
I look for a man and a king.
A king for the beautiful realm called home,
And a man that the maker, God,
Shall look upon as he did on the first,
And say, it's very good."
I am fair .and young, but .the roso will fade
From my soft young eheek, one day
yi you love me then 'mid the falling leaves,
As you did 'mong the bloom of May 7
Is your heart an ocean so strong and deep
1 may launch my all on its tide ?
A loving woman finds heaven or hell,
On the day she is made a bride.
I require all things that are grand and true,
All things that a man should be;
If you give this all, I would stake my life
To be all you deemed of me.
If you cannot be this a laundress and cook
You can hire, audi little to pay ;
But a woman's heart and a woman's life
Are not to be won that at ay.
Sunday Reading.
A jaan maybe ever go moral and not
Jiave a bit of religion.
Teach nothing but the truth of God,
because nothing but thai will save souls.
The Gospel is a box of most precious
ointment: by preaching it the box is
broken and the fragrance diffused.
It is not good works, or kind words
that saves men, it is faith in Christ by
a hearty repentance that saves theoi.
Grace never appears grace till sin
appears to be fein. The deeper the sense
pf the evil of sin is, the deeper our ap
prehensions of the free grace of God
in Christ will be.
earning, like monoy, may be of so
base a coin as to be utterly void of use ;
pr, if sterling, may require good man
agement to make it serve the purpose
pi sense or happiness.
There is too much of the cold silence
of ingratitude amongst us. 31 y not
many of our barren seasons be ascribed
tp the fact that we did not thank God
for fruitful ones ? Spurgeon.
One living, earnest Christian, who
can offer the prayer of faith, bo he ever
to poor, is worth more to the cause of
Christ than a thousand worldly minded
and careful professors, be they ever so
rich.
The moment a man gives way to in
ordinate desires. di.riuietude and tor-
1
ment take possession of his heart. The
proud and the covetous are never at
rest; but the poor and humble possess
their- souls in the plentitudc of peace.
Many afflictions will not cloud and
obstruct the peace of mind so much as
one sin ; therefore if ye would wait
cheerfully, be more careful to walk
holily. All the winds about the earth
make no earthquake, but only that
within.
The greatest man is he who chooses
the right with invincible resolution ;
who resists the Forest temptations from
within acd without , who bears the
heaviest burdens cheerfully ; who is
the calmest in storms, and whose re
liance on truth, on virtue, on God is
the most pnfa'.tering.
So comprehensive are the doctrines
pf the gospel, that they involve all
moral truth known by man ; so extent
give are the precepts, that they require
every virtue, and forbid every sin.
Nothing has been added either by the
labors of philosophy or the progress of
human knowledge.
The strength which God haseducated
and fostered in the last struggle will
greatly assist you in the next, The
man who gives way to one sin will very
readily give way to another, but a man
who through Gods grace has wop
Tery high vantage ground by mastering
one sin, will be very likely to win an
pthef, Spur g eon.

Dr. J. P. P. Va? Dei Bkhch Drnr Sir : I
deem it my duty t make the following state
ment : For the last three years I have been
suffering with constant gnawing pain and a
quivering sensation in my stomach, also pain
in my chest and heart, my food would not di
gest and I was so nervous that with difficulty
J could follow my occupation, which has been
here in Salem for the past ten years, as a prac

and misery I had wasted away to a mere skel
eton. I had been doctoring a great deal with
out any benefit, and believing there was no
help for roe hut to linger on until death would
relieve all my Buffering. Sorne of my friends
thought I had worms and had better soo Dr.
Van Den Iiergh. Ho told me at once that
worms were the cause of all my troubled, so he
gave mo 6 small and tasteless powders and in 4
hours about 700 worms, from one inch tp one
and one half inches long, caamo away from mo
that day, and the following night soma more
came, and now I am happy to say I feel like
another man again, and am gaining strength
from day to day. II. SMITH, M. D.

Another Great Slaughter
We think it oar duty to make the follrwing
statement in hopes it may do some good to sick
children : Our child had been sick for some
time. Thinking all the time our little one was
troubled with worms we tried many doctors and
a sreat many remedies without any relief,
Some neighbors told ua we should go and try
Dr. Van Den Bergh, the wortn, doctor in Salem,
We did so and he gave us one botttle of bis
celebrated Worm Syrup, and after giving the
medicine, to our great astonishment about 800
wot ma passed away from our dear child, aad
now, thank heaven she is well again.
