LOST.
Lost to the world, ami its old sweet ways
It in it wiM-of -ivuu amlsiu;
Remorseful tb'ju.hta of hU nher day.,

God !hiul.l :vti l pity! None vUo can savo
The joyf lost wrotoh from a drunkard's grave,
Ab ! yea ; ha U drunk, but I iity him so,
F r be is frioinllejis, anil poor. auduld ;
It is warm, the rain will not chill, I kno w
Twere tho same if freezing cold.
See him lyinj? prone ami helpless there,
The beating rain on hid long, tutu hair.
I look at .Uii foul ami bloated lip?,
At Lis hands oh ! shameful and sad to sec
Then down at the littlo white hand I hold,
At the little white foot on luy'knce,
I know tlfut a mother, tender and true,
Blessed Iho lost one's life when a baby, too.
My A'g!rs twioo iu my darling's hair,
White the 8U r.mer rain falls suit and still ;
I look at the poor old wanderer there,
And weep despite my rriil,
I weep tor the mother who bared her breast.
To lull that form to its childish rt-st.
I know tho fingers were tender as mine,
'I'uat toyed, like mine, with hi golden hair
It unco was gulden, I see tho shino
01 its laded tplender there.
Ah ! where is the hand and dear white breast,
That soothed him onca to his infant rest 1
Dear litU eye-, so blue- n.nd deep,
Soft little hands soplnmp and fair'
Let mo close tbe one tj a dreamless sleep,
And fold tho oih rs wliero
They linll inner move on earth again;
Than sou them with such a t hameful stain,
Mothers of earth, when we rear our sons
Vii,h such laving and tender pride,
IIow Hale we know v, here feet will stray,
th tke paths ol the world s wirJ.

- The Ann of 'Ma:.'. 4,Tho age of
niMj," says the Guud Rook, "is three
score years aud ten." yet many cases
are on record of men who have attained
tho "-ago of ono hundred' and there are
iustaneea ; of; persons roaching one
hundred and twenty to one hundred
and seventy, and even to 185 the age
of a Hungarian peasant natuctl Petrach
Czirtatu who was born 15S7 and died
in 1771' Shakspearo divides life into
seven stages; aud av;u,of science into
four distinct periods only Infancy,
youth, maturity and decline. Some
apply tho term to infancy, boyhood,
adolescence, virility, maturity, deeliue,
and old age, of a state of childhood.
Infancy refers to the first two years of
existence, during which the . first set of
teeth are developed, childhood, betweeu
two and eight, .when the first teeth are
shed and new ones take their places ;
boyhood, from eight 'to fifteen, when a
marked transition is effected ; adoles
cence, from fifteen to twenty -one;
manhood culminates at forty-five or forty
eight. From from that time, although
the mind retains and even increases its
power, still the body begins U loose its
energy, and gradually declines through
the descending scale of maturity to old
age. Women arc more precocious than
men, and yet the average duration of
life acceeda to the fact that they are
less exposed to accident and dangerous
in the common course of events conse
quent to our daily vocations, and more
extreme cases of female, longevity are
recorded. Golden dig'.
A Bell Rkven Huniiif.i Years
Old Fished Up. An Irish paper
states that as three men were poling a
boat along the Abbe Kiver, County f
Limerick, on Saturday August lilh,
the pole which they were using stuck
in the bottom of the river, and for a time
their united exertions failed to ex
tricate it. At last they succeeded, when
to ' their astonish ment they discovered
that it was an enormously large metal
bell, which remained suspended to it,
and which they jjot into the boat. The
bell, which weights about twelve stone,
bore some inscriptions which has not as
jet been deciphered. On a close in
spection it was, however, found that it
bore the date 1181 and is supposed to
have belonged to St. Mary's Cathedral
and to have been thrown into the river
during the siege of Limerick.
