TO RAILROAD MliN. A gentleman who understands wherof he speaks, has furnished us the follow ing for publication : " While all parts of our Slate are putting forth their claims for a railroad from the East, and are setting up their respective advantages for coming into the valley, our . attention has been called to the fact that Clackamas County is also a candidate for the'Tjnion Branch of the Pacific Ilailroad. At the point where ,this proposed survey strikes Old Fort Boise, it makes a direct diversion north of about 150 miles, and then strikes the Columbia River, and comes down the river on an almost impassable rood. The road can be brought from F'-rt Boise down what is known as the Emigrant lloud at a distance of at least 150 miles, and we are informed that there is no more natural pass through the Cascades than this road presents. Wrc can see no good reason why this rad should divert so much out of the way in order to come into the Willamette Vf alley, when there is a natural pass through Baker and Wasco Counties, on an almost straight line to the Willamette Valley. We call the attention of railroadmen to this matter, and if they will give it their consideration, they cannot fail to ?ee the natural advantages presented by this route. It is useless, as well as ex pensive, for this road to run from Old Fort Boise to intersect the Columbia River, and while there is a natural pans el, short distance over the Cascades, where the snow is never over four or five feet deep, it looks to us like folly to run it in that direction. While Multnomah vuuuiy, aim xuruiiuu in particular, have taken much interest in railroad matters, we would call the attention of the papers of that place to the fact that this route is the one by which they would be most benefitted, and we hope they will direct public attention to the same- ' There can be no question but that the'opening id the Cascades known as the Foster route is the lowest grade of any, and that an easy grade can be had. The road on this line would pass to, the south of Mount Hood, and would be on a direct line from Old Fort Boise. Instead of making a turn at that place of about 150 miles nortrf.it wutd run almost on a direct line west Since our a'tentioo has been called to this matter, we are at a lots to know why this route has not had a consideration long since from those who are conver sant with such matters. We shall speak of this matter again." Enterprise. AMICHK AN HOOKS IN EfiGLAND. Mr. Snillcy, writing from Kogland In the Tribune, saj?s : ' There ts a manifest slowness on the partol the English book buying public to accept an American edition of an English author. - Mr. Grant White's Shakspere never had any jrrcat sale in England. The edition of Burke, published in Boston by Messrs. Little & Brown, is I suppose, -the best in existence better than the llivingston edit on, which is tho tuost complete and the latest published in England, and now out of print. It cannot find a market there. So with the Hume's Essays of the same house j it is known and can be bought in London, but tho old, imperfect Edinburgh edition of 182-1 is still more sought for. The difficulty docs not lie in the expense of importing, since all these books are cheaper in London than in America. That is one of tho secrets in the book trade into which I don't attempt to penetrate. Mr. Furness first volume is published in Philadelphia at $7 f0, and can be bought in London of the importers for $6, and of othtjr book sellers for $5 a striking contrast to what occurs with books going from England to America, in which latter ease the tariff accounts for but a small portion of the enhanced price. I asked a very intelligent bookseller why such an edition as Mr. Furuess' should not at once take its proper place in the Lon don trade. At first he hinted something about copyright troubles, but finally said, " Well, the real difficulty is that the book has Philadelphia aud not Lon don on the title rase." I understood pthat to mean simply that the English booksellers do not care to pen, nor the English public to buy, an American book. The absence of a ropynht pro duces a continued ill feeling, which nothing but the enactment of an hoti est law will dispel. AMC1UCAN? A good joke has been told us on Mrs. Fair's fourth hus. band, Snyder, which we have not ieen in print. Snyder is said to be the hand somest man in the United States, and was formerly a heavy coal dealer in Philadelphia, but soon alter coming to this coast a few years stnee, went through on stocks or something of that sort. Mrs. Fair met him in an omnibus and determined to marry him on ac count of his beauty. She sought an introduction and soon afterward they were married. Snyder thought it was ail right until tho second night, when the fair one made him it up or occupy the sofa all night. Snyder bucked a little next morningwhen Mrs. Fair re paired to a gun store and procured a brace of pistots. Snyder began to smell a mice, and went down to inquire among 14 the boys" as to the character and disposition of .lis beautiful bride. They told him not only what has been proven in Court, that her reputation for chastity was bad, but that she was a vixen, and would shoot or stab a man on the elightcst provocation. Snjder locked serious, thoughtover fora moment the harh words he said to her before she went for the pistols, then raising his eyes heavenward and clasping his hands together, exclaimed in an earnest tone .
