Mr.T. L. Nickltn announces that be wUl be

in such, a. contest. He does not propose to go

iCrop on the Reservation. We are credibly
informed that there is about 700 acres of grain
sown on the Grand Round Reservation, 120
-acres on the Government farm, and the remain--djr
sown in patches by the Indians. This,
.added to the large amount of ground they have
in garden, will give tbem a much larger sup
ply of provender this year than usual. They
have on hand from last year's crop quite a
surplus of wheat.-oat? and hay.
We are pleased to see so much "interest man
ifested by our citizens in the formation of a
Silver Band in Dallas. A meeting , will be
held at the Court House next Thursday evening
to take initiatory steps for organization, and
for determining the proper plan -for operation.
This will give , all an opportunity of showing
what they can'and will do in the premise J, and
bring matters into a business sh ipe. A good
band here would enliven the town, add to its
interest, and eventually enhance our material
prosperity.
Musical visit. Last Saturday, after the ex
ercises were over at the Pie Nic at Dixie, tho
Monmouth Band paid "alias visit, and as
they passed through oar streets, discoursed
some of their best music. The people of Dallas
return thanks for the c mpUment, and request
them, whenever-circumstances are favorable, to
jgive another call. We trust we will soon he
able to reciprocate favors. The question has
been agitated of -forming'5 a Band berq, and
preliminary steps have 'already been taken for
theiaccomplishment of that object.
The person who. would steal wood from a
poor widow woman, 'ought to 'he compelled to
live where the mercury was forty degrees below
xero, and nonrood within stealing distance. We
understand .-that parties "have been helping
themselves to wood from Mrs. Ellsberry's
-woodpile, and would suggest the propriety of
dheir stopping the nefarious business before
they bring themselves into note, and find them
selves before a barf justice. Mrs. E. depends
.upon her own Tabor, antf the assistance of
citizens here for support, and anyone thieving
from such an one should be branded with
ignominy. - viy? J K' :'
County Lodge.- Notwithstanding the Incle

sble. speakers were there to edify and instruct,
juad all went merry as a wedding balL The
next meeting is to take place at Vat Fontis, on
the 4th of July. The calculation is to have a
celebration at that time and place. An invita
tion is extended to Marion, Yamhill, and other
Counties to send delegates to the Lodge Ses

How to See Down a Well.
i It is not geuerally known how easy
a matter it is to explore the bottom' of
a well, cistern, or pond of water, by the
use of a common mirrof. : When the
sun is shining brightly, hold a mirror
so that the reflected rays of light will
fall into the water. A bright spot will
be seen at the bottom, so light as to
show the 8m al lest obj ec t plainly. By
this means we have examined the bot
toms of wells fifty feet deep, when half
full or more of water. The smallest
straw or other small objects can be per
fectly seen from the surface. In the
same way one can examine the bot
toms of ponds and rivers, if the waters
be somewhat clear, and not agitated by
winds or rapid motion. If a well or
cistern be under cover, or shaded by a
building, so that the sunlight will not
fail near the opening, it is only neces
sary to em . loy two mirrors, using one
to reflect the light to tho opening, aud
another to reflect it down into the water.
Light may be thrown fifty or a huudrcd
yards to the precise spot desirable, and
then downward; We have used the
mirror with success to reflect ; light
around the house to a shaded well, and
also to carry it from a south window
through two rooms, and then into a
cistern tinder tho north side of 'the
house. Haif a dozen reflections of light
may be made, though each mirror d m
inishes the brilliancy of the light. Let
any one not familiar with the method
try it, and he will not only find it use
ful, but a pleasant experiment. It will,
perhaps, reveal a mass of sediment at
the bottom of the well that has been
little thought of, but which may have
been a frightful source of disease by its
decay iti the water, Exchange.
The Democratic Era, published by
