' Ode to Spring;. I
. "Would thou wert here sweet maiden,!
With thy blushes of delight.
'"While around in graceful motion,
Nyinybs in waiting smile bo bright
Xist ! that tepbyr, tbe breathless motion,
Sweetly whispers; gently plays, f
Thro' the tree; whilst 'inong the branches,
Warbling songster's sing thy praise.
Beauteous flowers, from earth then springing,
Rich with gems of pearly dew
Whilst from blooms sweet honey seeking
.Insects huui, would welcome you. j
Yea, they'd seek tbe choicest morsels
Sumptuous tables would they spread t
For their Qeen to feast ; whilst fairies
Lay soft carpets for thy tread. .,
.And from branches, garlands hanging

'While roam! the banquet h.ill of beauty,
Floats sweet luuaio's stirring strain.

Loving hearts and voices truo,
Watt thy coming with caresses,
Come ye ! Nature waits for you.

Shopping lu lndepeudau.ee.
A shopping I went to this far-noted tswn,
To buy me some tinware and also a, gown ;
The tinmen and saddler, merchants and all,
I mutt not be partial but give each a call.
I called on the saddler 0 what a nice fellow.
-To bitch aod unhitch my horse from my buggy.
Then I went to the tinner' to examine bis ware,
.No ii was him I would see ; but I fiod him 0
j" where?
O bere he comes now, the dear little duck,
But U be's so sky ; (This is always may luck.)
X bought me bucket and paid for it down,
Then bied vie away, to purchase a gown.
To buy m a gown I have great desire felt,
But soon changed ray mind from a gown to a
"Belt."
0 that dear little Belt, when it circled my waist
1 really felt as if pleasantly laced.
Now papa and mama; when you want aught in
haste,
To Independence I'll go, for it just suits my
taste,
And pretty fair maidens I'll say this to you
Dont yon go there a shoppiug with my "Belt"
in view.

The greatest, in oat far-reaching re
result of the war which ha.- just ended,
i seen, not in the dcrrndalion of
France nor the elevation uf Prussia,
bat in the fact that other nations arc
now aoout to enter up n a new process
of preparation like that which the Ger
.man power has pursued absorbingly
for more than half a century. Not only
Prance, but Iluisiu, and even England,
now propose to learn in the school
which has sq effectively drilled the
Jrrasstan people, that even the peasants
in their first fight rival in daring and
soldierly skill the veteran whose life is

Austria or Italy should do go is not
surprising j but that England, so reluc
tant in going to war, should deliberately
and after long hesitation decide to
Relinquish her distinctive and unique
relations to European politics, and enter
gain into rivalry with her neighbors,
is a more noticeable result of the war
just closing. Foreign papers report
that the Prussian .system of military .
pianeuvres jn thi field for practice
.will be introduced into the British
army this year. It may be that this
introduction will be but partial, and to
.call the volunteers generally into ser
viceand the instruction of volunteers
by ample practice, in the place of a gen
eral enrolment and service in the
active army, is certainly the reason for
.and the object of such maneuvres -will,
we suppose, require either a new
Jaw, or else a stir of popular enthusiasm.
Jf it is to be general,, this is the most
.exciting news that has come since the
jthree days in August, wVan all the
weakness of France, and the hopeless
oess of its cause were so rudely re
yealcd. Army and Navy Journal.

and thus earn an honest penny. From
this the couple advanced Jn their ambi

for covering buttons ; the first employ

and then others, until Samuel Williston
made half the buttons of the world.
His factories are still running a. East
