Negotiations have been in progress for some
time between several of our citizens and the
heirs of the Riggs estate, for the purchase of a
half block of land on Mill Street, belonging to
aid estate. We understand the purchase
about to be consummated, in which case several
new stores nciK be built immediately. We sin
cerely hope this may be be ease, as it will g'i7e
Dallas an impetus which has long been needed,
and the result we trust will be, the building up
of a permanent and substantial tfade.
Congratulatory. By referring to the column
of special notices in this issue, it will be seen
that Dr. J. C. Grubbs, well known in this
vicinity as a successful medical practitioner,
has concluded that it was too lonesome to
grub" alone, and has taken to himself a part
ner for life. We were favored by the estimable
lady with an excellent cake, beautifully frosted
and tastily adorned with a wreath of laurel;
and as we discussed its merits, all hands united
in extending to the happy couple hearty eon
gratalations, and wishing that their lives, like
the cake, might be " rich'' enough to be agree
able, and as pure as its crystal frosting.
We are informed by Mr, Ilenkle that an
altercation took place at Philometh, Benton
County, laU Thursday, between John White,
a' student In the school there, and Frank Ma
sou, a blacksmith, whiQi resulted in the fatal
injury of White. It seems that there bad been
a difficulty between them sometime previously,
but each bad to all appearance buried .the
hatchet. On the day above mentioned, how
ever, an altercation took place between them at
the shop occupied by John Mason and an elder
brother named Eli. The old feeling came up ;
from words they eame to blows, and Eli stand-
ing by saw that hii brother war about to get
the worst of it, concluded be wonld lend a help
ing band, caught up a small bar of iron, threw
it at White, striking him on the side of the
head, inflicting a wound, from which be died in
about seven hours. ; The remaining parties are
under arrest. The sad affair has thrown a pall
over the community, as the parties were all in
good standing in society. The unfortunate
