DALLAS, SATURDAY. 31 Alt: 11.
A Saint" aud Sinner" at Heaven's
Gate.
In a dream I saw fa ctherial space,
Two souls approach the heavenly place
, In a lively race not encumbered jwith weight,
They qnickly reached the goldep gate i
Where tbey found the anjjelin a,ttendance near
Awaiting appeals with listening! ear.
The believing 'Saint' with Holy pride,
At once to the angel thus replied, :
Lord I have obeyed the Churchtfa' laws,
And in the morning of life espoused its cause ;
I always believed salvation's plain,
And Moses theory of in;in.
I prayed most fervently for the poor,
"Whofe hunger drove tbetn to my door,
I fully believed the 'miraculous birth
In our 'Holy Book' of holy wrurth,
And would draw the sword on th thinkers free
Who dared to say it was n-t fnmi the-,
I responded to the churchts' soiindiii!? bell,
" Knowing who didn't would ' t h i
Stated prayers were my delight.
And serving Ood each Sunday f'ight,
"Where Saints assemble to seek tjhy face
And gain the crown prepared ly thy &race
-To whom with brightly beaming eyes
And chosen words the angel-guard replies :
i , Thou fool 1 while at case in thy j belief
' My children suffered without rHef, .
'.'"And all thy prayers so sweet tojhear,
"Ne'er fed the hungry or dried aj tear
"Go now! minister to sorrows low estate,
.Then thou mayest pass the pearly gate.
The angel now with holy deeds impressed
Turned to the Sinner with thii request:
What bast thou done on the shore of time,
To merit this high and happy eliuio?
With noble brow and throbbing breast,
. That oft had pillowed the distressed,
And a purpose good whate'er betido.
-To the angel-guard he thus replied :
Lord, IcouMu't believe vithout matter of grade
. The world in just six days was made ;
And that Ood repeuted creation's pian,
When crowning his work with immortal man.
Lord, I couldn't believe in an 'Only Sou
I deemed them children erery one.
For all could boast they came from Ood,
From the moderns back to the tribes of Nod ;
Each forming the links in one great chain,
N power on earth can cut in twain.
But I did perceive the right from wrong,
Alens righeous works I proclaimed iu song,
And taught by my life the sacted story,
That loving1 deeds lead men to glory ;
And I guided my action by this rule,
So plainly taught in life's great school.
To whom the angel with kiudly eye.
At once vouchsafes the sweet reply :
J Brother draw near ! thy course was ri 'ht,
Take thy reward this crown of light
And quickly the gate of jaspef and gt Id
Swung open wide tor the 'Sinner's soul.
