The Literary Society f Dallas met oa Thurs
day erening. The exercises eonskted sasily
-of reading and singing. Miss Clara Watt and
Mr. J. L. Collins read Poe's poem, "The
Haven." The piece was well read by both par
ties, though the decision of the Judges, as welt
as that of the audience, was in favor of Miss
Watt, and wo think, joatly so. Her full meiodi-
ous voice, is well cultivated, and her style of
reading is eno that has seldom, if ever, been
equalled in Dallas. Mr. Slate, of the Rcpcbli
cas office,4 did theoptratie" ateho close of the
zercises. with credit to bimsel. and to the
entertainment of all. We hope the Society will
h aeuccess.

Gen Grant will not be the Republican
