him with an attempt to murder Theo
dore B. Hylton. W. H. L. Barnes,
who Volunteered as Lansing's counsel
whoa he was first, arrested., appeared
. for him yesterday, and District Attorn
ney By me appeared for the prosecu
tion. t Hylton testified that on the 30th of
MayJast, he was walking along Moot
gomery street, between Qlay and Com
mercial, near J. G. Steele's drug store
when" he heard the report of a pistol,
felt a stinging sensation on the left
cheek and a tearing sensation' underJ
the right eye. He staggered but did
not fall, and i was supported into : the
drug store by two meo, and after his
wound bad been dressed, he was taken
home. Did not see who fired at him.
and jonly Lansing once before at his office
' in reference to some article that had
been published about a prostitute in
VirgioiajOityJ. Hylton further testified
; that he was the proprietor publisher,
and editor of Our Afazeppa, and had
correspondents in this State and Neva
da, furnished him with general news.
Detective Johnson - testified that he
heard of Hylton being shot. Saw no
shooting. Saw Mr. Lansing on Mont
gomery street after the shooting. Lans
ing iaid he had a pistol. He pulled two
deriogers out of his pocket, one loaded
and the other discharged. He said he did
not care to talk about the matterfand
did not admit that he bad done the
.shooting. .
. v , An old French flower vendor was
next introduced by the prosecution.
He stated that he was on 21st street
when the shooting. transpired, and con
sequently knew nothing of the matter.
.Mr. Byrne said he had been unable to
find any witnesses, and that was , all he
could offer.
. Judge Lake .said it was a surprising
matter that a man could be shot down
on Montgomery street at an hour when
it was crowded, and not a witness be
found who could testify to the shooting,
and who could come forward spontane
ously and give his testimony.
. ' . , , . . ...
iur. uarncs said ne coma maice that
"clear. At least from 50 to 75 persons
aw the shooting, but when they learned
who had been shot, they turned away
and foigot that they had seen it. '
Jndge Lake said it was an extraordi
nary, case, and as it had been presented
he could not do otherwise than to in
struct the jury, to render a verdict of
t acquittal, which they accordingly did.

- Editor Oregon Republican,
. Dear Sir : In your issue of the 26th
nit., T see what purports to be a report
of a Sanitary Meeting of the Citizens of
Dallas.: In that part of the " garbled
string" that alludes to myself, I desire
, (to 1 report correctly what transpired,
' and the connection in which it did
transpire. The meeting was discussing
the propriety of indefinitely suspending
all business in Our midst, giving as a
: reason for so doing, that it would take
r from, oar neighbors one great induce
ment that would bring them to our vil
lage; and one speaker went so far as to
i say, the U. S.mail should be "stopped'
for fear the small pox would be intro
duced through, the mail matter. In
this connection, I suggested to the
.Chairman, would it not be better, and
more effectual, if the object were to
prevent; all persons from coming
amongst us. to re nor t as true, the exist.
, c- - f - r
ince of ten cases. of small pox in our
town
"It is worthy of note," Mr. Editor,
O' C
Secretary a Report," was a " practical
joke", perpetrated upon the outsiders by
Rome of our tcaaaish citizens. .

THE TURF
Racing at Agricultural Park
. The trot on Saturday last called out
a much Jarger f crowd than we ' have
ween on the track for a long time The
weather up to noon was hazy and foggy,
but the afteraon turned out pleasant.
Th trot was for horses that had never
beaten 2-39, in harness, for a purse of
$390, to go mile heats, best three in five,
the winner to get $200, and the second
horse $100. The fact that the a ma
jority of the contestants had beaten
2-39 since the entries " were closed,
brought a good many persons to see
how much these figutes would be re
duced, but our prediction that 2 39
wou'd win is corrobated by the time rec
ord. -:
The Judges were Vico Preident II.
R. Covey, asited by Misers C. S.
Crittenden, and Ex-President Captain
E. J, Weeks ; Distance Judge, I.N
Killip . Timers, Messrs. Loo. Hamil
ton aod White.
FIRST HEAT.
The heat was trotted in a. dense fog:
at the three-quarter pole could be seen
Belfe, Ajax, and Penuts side by side
-the other two haedly in the race; the
three named wung into the home
stretch together. It was now a "life and
death" heat, and brought but all that
could be done in the way of expert
driving. Belle crossed the score first.
Ajax at her wheel, and Peanuts half a
length behind him, the other two a bad
fourth and fifth- Time, 2 39 J.
! SECONDHEAT.
Belle broke at the quarter pole, and
Peanuts shot by and opened a gap
of two lengths on her. Russel also
out trotted the nmre and went up to
Peanuts, but could not et past his
wheel ; and the heat was finished in that
position, Peanuts winning the heat,
Russel second. Belle third Bracelet
fourth, and Aajax fifth. Time , 2 391
THIRD II EAT.
This was a repetition of the last heat
with the exception of Belle and Aj ix
changing places. Time, 2-28$.
FOURTH DAT.
' This was the best contested mile trot
ted in the race. Little Ajax swung to
his friend Peanuts,' and would some
times go up to him, bnt as often he
would get the cold shoulder at the dis
tance stand. Peanuts made extraor
dinary cxeftion and crossed th score
the winner of the heat, race and first i
money. Time, 2 39 1.

Probable Success of the Schemes of

- London, Nov, 20,The TTorW cor
respondent has interviewed a member
of the British Government, who said:
It is now certain that no combination
of Powers will be formed against Rus

8i,neld the. treaty of 1850, and all are
I eqUally aggrieved at Russia's violation
equally
thereof, but, twill not even unite in a
collective note of remonstrance. France
is powerless. . Prussia connives with
Russia. Italy declares she will not join
any diplomatic movement against ltus
ia having gained tho ojeetoChcr form
er alliauce with Frano and England,
There remains Austria. She will ad
dress a note to Russia, but not to
threaten war. I if 1S07 Count. Reusr
himself proposed the abolition of the pro.
vision of the treaty restricting the sov
ereignty in the Ulack Sea. He is now
quite willing, even anxious, to make a
still higher bid for the friend-hip of
Russia. England will be left alone,
should nhe insist ou refusing to join a
Cougress tor the decisiou of Russia's
claim.'' She will not insist' The.Oon
grcss will meet, and Russia will gain her
puint. Granville letter does not mean
war. , England, has no wish for the
struggle herself. Turkey is on one
side; Russia, Prussia and the United
States are on the other. The remain
ing Powers are mere spectators. Bis
marck has a secret treaty with Russia.

Pure Air Iu Churches.
I Architect-, building committees,
trustees and sextons ought to have
some one to remind them perpetually,
that fresh air is a vital necessity in
churches. Better do without almost
anything else. A living gospel ought
uever to be preached In a dead atmo.
phcre. Give us plenty of fresh air, and
the preachers will preach better, the
brethren will pray better, the people
will sing better, and all our mcetinsrs
will be bet ter attended, and followed by
better consequences. Give each one of
us our forty cubic inches of fresh air
for every inspiration, and for every
minute ot the service the eighteen pints
to which w are each justly entitled,
according to the doctors, and we shall
complain less of langour, headaches,
poor preaching, and dull meetings, and
bo in less danger of backsliding ; for we
devoutly believe that fresh air is a
means of grace. Methodist '
The above corresponds so whII with
our own feelings in regard to the sub
ject treated, that we feel,, bound to give
it to the public heje. and think the rule
ought to b strictly applied; to the
churches in Dallas, for it is a truth that
some have already become sick from a
bad cold caught in that way.
