Nettie Opluiou of Tobacce Smoke.
So you like .the smell of a good
etgiry.: do you? Well, I have heard
youog ladies suy so before, but I always
(thought that if I were in their place I
would not tell of it Whatever you may
ay, nobody will think you like the
oasty; stinking stuff for its own sake.
Why, it .almost strangles me And
after my papa has been smoking, I
would sometimes almost rather he
would not kiss me. I don't believe he
would waut to kiss me, it he should
m'ell tobacco smoke, in my' breath. I
am sure he would not call me his rose
bud again very soon. Iam very eer.
tain that men don't like tobacco breaths
in 'other people. 1 wonder if that ia
the reason they don't kiss each o;her.
Uow do you know they don't like
tobacco smoke ? Well, t can read some,
and dou't I see no smokjng" up
around Tn ever so many places? And
when I ask my papa what tbcj do that
for, be said, because it was not nice to
liave tobacco smoke from other people's
mouths puffed into your faces. My
papa said that himself. And then on
the ferry-boat, I see some of the men
flocking into the ladies' cabin because
their own is full of tobacco smoke. But
I don't see any ladies go into the men's
cabin- to get the smell of the smoke
And they don't scent their handker
chiefs with it, uor put it in to their
bouqets. I should think if the'y like it
60 well, they would have essence of
tobacco smoke among their Cologne
bottles .
Hah I nobody will make me believe
that a clean, sweet voting lady care
anything for the smell of a cigar un
less there is a man behind it. And the
men don't believe it, either. They" may
not'say so, but tbey keep thinking, and
they think you say so to please them,
the egotistical fellows. Perhaps after
wards they- will say es my brother Bill
said, the next day after you professed
to like his tobacco smoke. He said it
made him think of the young lady who
took few whiffs now. and then, w lit n
she was lonely, because it made it smell

Becoming CivIMZep. Yesterday
we saw a full blood aborigiue of one: of
the native Oregon tribes driving
through town in his own wagon, or so it
appeared, and behind a good sized pair
of ponies. The driver wore the earne.-
look of a mau of family, and his houses
hold goods wife ahd children .. were
stowed in behind, making quite at wagon'
full. The vehicle seemed too full, and
a female perhaps the, oldest daughter,
rode ou a pony which "ambled or migh
have ambled if the mud had been of
less depth in the rear. A colt cavorted
through, the surrounding mud, and
everything bore the look 1 of civilzation
perhaps a- little rude. This tilicum
will perhaps be a canidatc for some of
that universal suffrage we hear about,
at least his descendants may if civiliz
ation grows upon them for a generation

'Hamilton, Nov. 14. A dispute be
tween parties for possession of tho Ban
ner and Freade mines, at Piocho City,
culminated in apitched battle at that
place on Wednesday last, in which W.
G Snell was killed, som 10 others
wounded, and 2 precipitated down the
shaft of a mine, some 70 feet the lat
ter escaping with but few light bruises.
It appears that the Banners j drove the
workmen foom the works on Tuesday
evebingand tQok possession, holding the
mine nntit 5 o'clock Wednesday after
noon, when they were attacked and
driven out by a party of- miners.
Trouble hid beeu looked for-all day, for
it was rumored urouod town that a party
were arming to take possession of the
mine by force, if necessary. - At the
time f attack the trouble was sup
posed to be' over for a day at least, bnt
as obo as f the firing commenced ' the
mountain side was black with people.
The crowd were allowed to approach
within 100 yards, when ihey were halt
ed and forbidden to approach nearer.
Nono of the wounded are considered
in any great danger, but their wound
are tyeryjpainful. Following are the
names ot those wounded : J. Fiuley. X.
XewlandJJ. White, A. Daiiff, J. Mor-
ran, and 4 Conrtoey. The names of
those who: fell down the shaft arc not
yet ascertained Over 00 shots were
tired in the skirmish. 1 ho parties re
taiuing possession' of the Creade mine
after the fight were arrested by Sheriff
Kane on edoesday evening. 1 hey
were brought before Justice Clapp on
Thursday worthing, and, upon their
waiving an examination, were held uu-
