Fair commences nest Monday on the Fair
grounds of the Oregon Agricultural Society at
Salem.

the Qrand Rondo Indian Reservation, accord
ing to the U. S. census just completed, is
1,027.

Old Papers We saw, this week, two prom
issory notes made in May, They were
found among the papers of J. B. Riggs, de--ceased.

advantage of the nico weather and are draw
ing raits out of the mountains by the quantity.
There are probably fifty teams engaged at this

ation we- can gather there wilt be a greater
breadth of grain sown this fall than heretofore.
Our farmers are beginning to regard spring
crops w.'tb distrut. Occasionally they will
give a good yield, but for a certain crop full
sowing alms caa be relied upon.
More Mosey. There is evidently an im
provement in money matters in this vicinity
over the state of the market a in nth age.
This is owing to the faot that our farmers art
beginning to get returns from the sale of their
graia.' We look fr times to be reasonably
good here this fall.
Rinf. On Monday last and the night fol
lowing we had considerable rain, eoough to
wet down the dust and wake traveling most
excellent, bat-not for plowing. Many of our
farmers though have brought their plows to
the shops for repairs so as to be ready for the
time of action.
'TIklvic BniiK. The .'timbers and l imber
for the new bridge across the Luekianiute at
Hel one's are nearly all on the ground. The
principal part of the framing is being done at
the mill where the square timber was sawed.
The contractors will baro tho structure up be
fore many weeks.
Grait Pbotccei, -Mr, J. W. Crawford, of
the Grand Ronde Indian Agency, tells us that
, the amount of wheat threshed on the Depart
ment farm at the Aguney was 700 bushels.

oats. The Indiana, as private individuals,
have raised 5,0Girbushil of wheat and 6,000
bushels of oats.
Emigration. -Tho emigration from this
county tbis rail is considerable. ? This moving
is taking a direction that we dislike to see,
considering that population is what we need to

Wallamet University at Salem have
rented a house, hired a Chinaman to do
their cooking and waging, and find
that they can live in good style for two
dollars a week. !

egon Central Railroad Company, was
for 81,000,000 damages instead of

The corps of U. S. Topographical
Engineers under Lieutenant. Hucr. who
have just completed the survey of the
Upper Willamette and Yamhill river
yesterday began the surveys for the site
of the bridge which is to cress the
Willamette river between this city and
East Port'.aud.
Superintendent Thielson, of the Or
egon and California Railroad, advertise
in the Albany papers for 500 men and
100 teams to work on tho road. Here

work. The Superintendent still expects
to complete 100 miles of road by the
end of December.
Tho Register gives tho population of
Albany precinct at 2,094. The popu-

anticipated at the outset of the census
probably not over 9,00, making Linn
oounty the third in point of population,
instead of the second. The population
of Harrisburg is 350, all told. Scio,
too, the famed city of the "forks," falls

acting full reparation for these outra
ges. It is believed that Russia will iact

respondent at Ostend, telegraphs that
there is a great irritation at Rerlin on
account of what Prussian regard as a
violation of neutrality by the U. S., in
permiting shipments of munitions from
New York to Freuch ports. It is stated
that Prussia has demanded explanations
from tho American ministry.
A special eorrcspoudent at Roulogne
sends word from Tours that the South
em part of France is under arms.
Great numbers of troops .have arrived
at Tours from Marseilles and Rordeaux.
Towns on the Loire, Angers and
Nantes are crowded with soldierg. The
tuwns on the Rhine, from Lyons to
Avignon and Artcs, have assumed the
aspect of Camps. Rogers is in the
same condition. vNo thought of peace
seems to be entertained anywhere. ,
