Heated Teiw. -We begin to believe in the
mithical story of the Salamander, for if the
denizens of this place don't come as near liv
ing in fire as that fabled being, then wo have
lost our guess. On Saturday last the temporal
ture was decidedly tropical, the thermometer
running up to the nineties. Sunday was' warm
er, and Monday, the 4th, the mercury raied to
101. Tuesday and Wednesday were the hot
test day of the week, with the extreme tem
perature of 103. Thursday and Friday were

These observations wcro taken with the ther
mometer on the north east side of the build
ings, the location supposed to be the coolest.
The nights, too, have been exceedingly warm
more so than is u?ul in this country. In
residence of eighteen years in Oregon we do
not remember to have experienced so long a
term of hot weather. Notwithstanding the
high temperature cf the past few days we have
jtieard of no cafes of sunstroke, a thine mos
remarkable, when we consider that 90 heat
in the Atlantic cities enures scorrs of cases,
There is luiae quality in the Oregon climate
that fortifies the human system for enduring
extreme heat.
