COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER.
DALLAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 25.
Sulphur In the West Indies,
The New York Standard, a new and
lively daily paper under tbe charge of
John Russell Young, publishes the fol
lowing important paragraph :
Sulphur is a substance which has, if
Dot a fragrant, at least a decided odor,
and is useful both internally and exter
nally. Besides these purely personal
uses, it is largely used in this country
in the manufacture of sulphuric acid,
and for other manufacturing purposes.
As a matter of course, the source of
supply becomes a matter of consequence
'.especially to proprietors of extensive
manufacturing works. Heretofore, the
principal source , of supply has been
Sicily, which island has furnished it
from the extensive deposits left by the
volcanic movements observed there.
AVcare glad, however, to know, and to
be the first to announce, that a source
of supply has been discovered much
nearer home. It is in the island of
Saba, which is one of the Dutch West
Indies, and is situated about one hun
dred and ten miles southeast from St.
Thomas, and forty miles southwest from
&t. Martha's. Like its Italian proto
type, the island is of volcanic origin,
being about eleven miles in circumfer
ence, and at its highest point about
two thousand eight hundred feet above
the sea. Though a Dutch possession,
the language spoken by its two thou
sand inhabitants is chiefly English.
The sulphur deposit referred to was
discovered by an enterprising New
- Yorker, who found himself thereon a
search for health, and, finding indica
tions of sulphur ore, set to work with
pick and shovel, and, with the -help of
some natives, qarried two sloop loads,
which he brought here and submitted
to analysis.! The report of the chem
ists employed is to the effect that, while
the Sicily ores only yield about thirty
per cent, of brimstone for the ore con
sumed, the Saba ore yields an average
of over sixty per cent. Adding- to
this -the fact the island is only about
fifteen hundred miles from New York,
it will be seen that this is an important
discovery, and it need not be wondered
at that steps have already been taken
to secure leases of the best tracts of
island. We understand this has been
done, and that the importation of crude
brimstone will soon be commenced.
Together with the Louisiana sulphur
beds this mine will undoubtedly drive
Sicilian sulphur from our market.

A Speaking Automaton. A Ger
man genius has invented a speaking
machine, which is now on exhibition at
Lcipsic, and is a masterpiece of invent
ive art. It is in imitation of all the
parts of the human organs of speech,
executed in India rubber and wood.
A keyboard, played like that of a pi
ano, puts the parts in motion, while by
a pedal and bellows the required air is
sent through the wind pipe. The key
board has only fourteen keys, represent
ing the sounds of a, o, u, i, e, j, r, w, f,
s, b, g, d, s ; other sounds of the al
phabet are produced by the same move
ment, and the admission ot more or
less air. The sounds of m and 1 are
produced by closing the lips and press
ing the tongue against the roof of the
mouth, etc. The'French nasal sounds
are produced by a separate contrivance.
The laughing, it is said, sounds truly
diabolical, and the crowing of a rooster
very comical.
'
Sold and Got the Money.
Some lunatic has imposed the follow
ing on the New Orleans Times, and the
Times publishes it in all seriousness-:
In San Joaquin Valley, California,
butter is made by placing the cream in
a thick linen sack, and burying the
parcel in the earth over night. The
sand absorbs the milk, and in the morn
ing the butter is fougd as well worked
as by an hour's churning.
.Brevities.
If a man makes a beast of himself
at dinner, docs he become the lion of
the party ?
What is the difference between a
falling star and a fog? One is missed
in heaven and the other mist on earth.
"I'm leaving thee in sorrow," as the
man said to his wife when he sold all
his furniture and eloped with another
woman. 4 .
A Western lady is writing in favor
of limited marriages, for a given time,
ranging from one to three years, with
privilege of renewal by mutual eon
sent. An Indiana editor deprecates the
prevalent habit of killing and eating
robins, and says he would as soon eat a
slice of Parepa-Ilosa on toast as to eat
a robin.
What should a young man carry
with him when calling upon his affianc

in his manncrs; and confection in his

Mrs. PartingtoL has been reading
the healtlvofficers' weekly reports, and
thinks "total" must be an awful ma
lignant disease, since as many die of it
as of all the rest put together.
It is estimated, that over a hundred
young ladies are at present studying
law in this country. Probably they
will all become mothers-in-law one of
these days.
Alfred Jingle's dog is surpassed n
New Bedford, where they have a point

a door plate bearing the name of "A

A Western paper complains that the
only success of an oculist recently in
its locality was in enabling the flats
who consulted him to cut their eye
teeth. A Massachusetts paper expresses its
regret at learning that one of the pop
ular monthly magazines has expired, or
"at least lapsed into , the quiescence of
monenigomy."
At the Woman's Suffrage Conven
tion, in Dayton, one of the speakers
replied to the slanderous charge that
most of the ladies interested in the
movement have big feet.
"Do you think," asked Mrs. Pepper,
'that a little temper is a bad thing in a
woman ?" "Certainly not," replied a
gallant philosopher; "it is a good thing,
and she never ought to lose it.
"Don't leave the Courtroom, wit
ness," said a Shiawasse lawyer during
the trial of a case. "I want to ques
tion you farther." "Father's dead,"
replied the witness, "and can't be ques
tioned!" The Talbottom (Ga.) Young -American
states that an old negro woman in
that town knocked her husband over
with a chair recently, for refusing to
contribute to a fund for completing a
new church.
German astronomers assert that two
stars one in the constellation of the
"Corona," and the other in the "iEtha
Argus" (generally marked on astro
nonical charts by the Greek letter II)
have taken fire.
Have the public been hoaxed ? A
relative of the late George Teabody in
forms us that his body was buried at
Westminister Abbey, and that he great
fuss in this country was over a substi
tute corpse. Boston Herald.
"Husband, I hope you have no ob
jections to my getting weighed?''
"Certainly not, my dear; but why do
you ask me that question ?" "Only to
see, my love, if you would allow me to
have my weigh once."
"Won't you lc me kiss you, little
one?" asked a gentleman of the beau
tiful daughter of a beautiful mother,
as he was taking leave of her in the
cars. "Wouldn't you rather kiss moth
er ?" was the arch reply.

Scrofula is a taint or infection in tbe hu
man organism which weakens the vital forces,,,
and disorders or disarranges the functions of "
the whole system. This taint or infection is
most usually hereditary in the constitution, but
it may also arise from habits of life, unwhole
some food, etc. In time, if this disease docs
not show itself in an ulcerous or tubercular
form, it induces those other diseases, such as
consumption, ulcerations of the liver, stomach
and kidneys, salt rheum, dropsy, etc. The best
remedy ever yet discovered is "Dr. Walker's
Vegetable Vinega'k Bitters." It will cure
the disease if not too far advanced, and will
eradicate the cause.
