COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER.
jDAWiAS, SATURDAY, JUNK 18.
Sir. Seward -Asraiu.
"Tlie distinguishecl" Sage of' Auburn:
n Monday made his first speech since
his return from his Arctic visit
.that may be construed in any .way to
reflect the views.he now entertains on
.the possibilities of the nation he was so
lung'aM so' ably engaged inengineeis
ing through ...the greatest crisis. He
especially dwelt upon the mission of
the United States to harmonize all the
.civilization on this continent and to ad
vance steadily to higher notions, carry
ing ''our neighbors with .us, of the so
cial and political rights of man. It
mac be a feather in the cap of woman
suffrage advocates to know that his
speech was delivered on the occasiori of
the visit of a ladies' college-; but ow
ing to the barbarous and mediaeval no
ttions that prevail in our provinces,
these same ladies were all turned out of
the dining hall when the cloth was re
jnoved, and,i; therefore, - before the
speech was made. A number of majle
visitors, by reason of being physically
better fitted to drink wine and smoke,
jglone composed the- audience to whom
ihe addressed his words.
Mr. Seward has always had great,
iiroud ideas of the ' future of this na
tion, and we are glad to see that his
' sixfypiirtftli birthday finds. him fully as
broad and grand in his ideas as ever.
Jle says that the continent is becoming
.every day more American ; that the
practices and opinions of the people of
the United States are becoming the
.common , practices and opinions of the
other ' State Vnnd that the Christian re
ligion and the influence of the Repub
lican government are destined ere' long
to bleud all the governments of the
American continent into ono. Mr.
-Bcwaril is the very best authority from
whom those sentiments'could emanate.
Jle demonstrated years ago his trust in
(our nianiftpt destiny, and much later
lias helped along the desirable consum
mation by the purchase of Alaska and
the treaty for the purchase of St.
Thomas. It is pleasant to note that
iho present administration shares in
ihe grand old statement's., ideas of a
wnitod' contrnent
Dr. Franklin desoribed the farmer's
pondition in 1776, as follows .
"Farmer at the plough,
Wife milking cow,
Daughters spinning yarn,
' - i, Sons threshing in the barn
All happy to a charm."
Another writer gives the aooount of
1870, as follows, applicable, at least, to
some latitudes :
vThc farmer gone to see a show,
His daughter at the piano,
Madame gaily dressed in satin,
AH the boys are learning Latin
With a mortgage on the farm."
Chit Chat. The following, says

LAROfcrifOToaRAymrj Lens. The
largest photographic lens ever made in
England is one of 10$ inches in diam
eter, recently completed by Ross, and
now in the possession of a Regent St.
photographer. It Ts an achromatic
lens of great power, an4 will take por
traits of any 'size from the smallest
jniniature up to very nearly life size.
It is made of glass of the whitest de
scription, and its size admits so large a
volume of light that photographs cov
ering a space of 10 inches by 12 inch
es may be made in eight seconds. The
lens renders in the photogra; hs all
that is seen" in the optical image, and
this so truthfully that the coarseness
and exaggeration belonging to large
photographs taken with inferior lenses
are altogether , absent. .In the open
air, "groups of 'tea or twenty persons
(each face about the size of a sover
eign, and the whole picture 24 by 24),
can be taken with the short exposure
of ten seconds. The cost of manufac
turing the lens was upwards of 200,

The Iowa State Register,? May 25,
has this report of crops in that State:
Farmers say the rain3 of the past few
days will do a vast amount of good,
both to wheat and corn. The wheat
was a little thin on the ground, but it
is thought these rains will cause new
stocks to spring up, and will result in a
splendid crop. Corn is up and looking
finely.

Scrofula is a taint or infection in the hu
man organism which weakens the vital forces, ,
and disorders or disarranges the functions of ,
the whole system. This taint or infection is
most usually hereditary in the constitution, but
it may also arise from, habits of life, unwhole
some food, ete. In time, if this disease does
not show itself in an ulcerous or tubercular
form, it induces those other diseases, such as
consumption, ulcerations of the liver, stomach
and kidneys, salt rheum, dropsy, etc. The best
remedy ever yet discovered is "Dr. Walkers

the disease if not' too far advanced, and will
