however, that the principal strength of

been amonj the industrial classes, y In
the rural districts, in the thrifty por
tions of the North and Kast, in all
parts of the country where intelligent
and skillful laborJ abounds,' there the
llepubliean party, is very strong" and
carries all before it. Go, however, to
the great cities, to tho .hauuta ofj idle
vDCss and vice," to thetlcnse populations
who live in any way but by steady, hon
est labor, and there the Democratic par
ity has its chief strength ; there itcouots
on its greatest an i surest majorities.

Singular Phenomenon. On Fri
day night last the ; residents of the
ixjrthem part of town witnessed a show,
er that was, at least, remarkable, and so
tar, has not been explained. It was
raining hard at tho time, with little or
no wind, when a peculiar substance was
discovered to be settling down with the
rum. In color and appearance, it re
sembled flower of sulphur, and some
who tasted it pronounced it to be that

us that such was not the case: she

Square, where it was observed by Mrs

the neighborhood of Mr. J. E. Strong's.
Unfortunately, no attempt was made to
collect any oi the mysterious substance
..at first, but we hive a small quantity
that stood sometime on a water barrel,
and , if any one whb ean, will ascertain
the analysis, they are welcome to the
specimen. Such occurrences are by no
means unknown, but they are far from

Taxation of ..Church Property,
The question 'as to whether the town
lots in a Uhnrch yard which arc not ac
tnally coverd by the Church buildings,
are liable to taxation, was argued be"-
fore Judge Upton, in chambers, yester
day, in the case of The First Raptis
Church of Portland vs. Albert Zeiber,
Sheriff of Multnomah ounty. The
law of this State says that houses of
worship and the lots on which 'they
stand, when used for religious purposes
only, are exrmpt from tnxatiou. The
enclosure in which' the Ilaptist Church
stands coniprises lour town lots, on one
of which the Church edifice stands
the Assessor assessed the oljhcr three
as liable to be taxed. The case above
mentioned was brought to restrain the
Sheriff - from collecting sueh'tax The
case is a new 6n2, the question having
never been raised before in this State,
and as most, if not all, the Churches in
this city owning lots which are used as
Church j yards, desired a test case for
all, this has excited considerable inter
est. Mr. C. C. Ball arpeared on be
