Moved. Lieut. W. R. Dunbar, who has lat
terly been living at the Grand Ronde Agency,
moved into Marion county this week.
Weaving: Tho looms in the EUendale wool
en factory were put in motion this week. The
first goods turned out will be flannels.
By the conditions imposed io his letter,
"Old Bachelor" can know nothing of "Old
Maid," whose description of self was given
last week.
Political Speaking. J. G. Wilson and J.
IT. Slater, opposing candidates fur Congress,
will speak here on Tuesday next, at one o'clock
.
p. m.
Sowed. Capt Lafollette, Agent at the
Grand Ronde Indian Reservation, has sown
wheat and oats on the 120 acres that he plowed
during the winter, and the grain is now op and
growing nicely.
Book Binding. By an advertisement in the
the Salem paper we notice that the firm of C.
P. Snyder & Co. has been dissolved and that
Mr. Snyder will continue the business alone.
The work from this bindery is equal to that of
any bindery on this coast, and paaties hiving
old books or magazines to be bound cannot do
better than send to Mr. Snyder, at Salem.
Mr. J. W. Jasper formerly of the McMin
rille Courier, called on ns yesterday evening.
He is looking well notwithstanding tiie abuse
of Democratic papers. The reason they abuse
him is because he bolts the 8th resolution of
the Albany platform, and is now stumping the
State against repudiation. lie spoke here last
sight on that subject.
Crops at Grand Ronde. Capt. Lafollette
informs ns that 150 acres of wheat and oats
have been sown on the Grand Rondo Indian
Reservation. This land has been well prepar
ed and the young plants are looking exceed
ingly well, better than at any time within the
past ten yeare. The amount of land being cul
tiratedds greater than heretofore. .
Daily Mail. We saw a note from Postal
Agent Underwood this week stating that the
contract for carrying the daily mail from Cor
vallisto Portland on this side of the river has
been let to J. D. Carr and G. Coggan, for $9,000.
Carr is a part owner ia the Oregon an I Cali
fornia Stage Co., and Coggan is a freighter In
Eastern Oregon. This new company has the
means with which to stock tho line imme
diately. ,

Bcbned. Mr. John Friar, mail-carrier from
Lafayette to Corvallis, informs ns that on Wed
nesday night last Hunt's Jager beer brewery in
Corvallis was , burned. It is not ccrttinly
known how the fire ignited, though it was
aomewbere in the second story. Workmen had
been engaged about the premises until about an
hour before the fire was discovered. At that
time every ,person was abed, and although the
night watch discovered it, he was unable to get
the town alarmed until it was too late to save
the property. Nothing was burned but the
fcrewery. Loss $4,000, partially insured.
Annual. We have received the Annual of
Messrs. Hudson and Manet, for 1870. It is a
book of 216 pages and contains information
that should be in the possession of every busi
ness man who is alive and keeps np with the
timpa. Of all the advertising agents with whom
we have done business, we prefer Messrs. H. St
M. They are more prompt and accomodating
than any firm with whom we are acquainted.
From this fact alone newspaper men would
rather receive orders through this firm than
directly from headquarters, and advertisers can
always do better by giving their orders to Hud
on and Meoet than to the newspaper direct,
or to any other firm that we know of.
