V Correspondence .to the Oregonian.
la tny last letter I showed you how
the -decadence of the colony had
brottght two parties in the field who
. nought, in converse ways, it is true, the
same objects, viz: immediate relief to
thecomumnity in general. farther
fntiasated that the designs of both par
ties would be materially affected by the
. 'development! made at Peace River dur
ing the ensuing summer. If those de
velcpments are satisfactory, then, as a
matter of course, those advocating
Confederation with Canada, will canter
over incr course;, u .unsaiisiaciory,
then it is impossible to tell to what ex
tent the doctrine of annexation with
America will be adopted, or the de-
gree of power it will have over all
classes in the community.
To show; therefore, the precise proV
; pejot of these political parties, I nave
dimply to show upon what grounds oar
Jiopes of rich general diggings being
opened on Peace liivcr during the next
seaaon are based.
In the first place you must under
stand that the existence of gold in pay
ing quantities over a large portiga of
that extensive district, is not a matter
wof recent discoverer. As far back as
1001 tne existence ot gold at umineca
v was proved beyond doubt. From that
time up to last year, there has been no
lengthened penod without our receiv
ing, in one way or the other, and
through sources as varied as reliable,
confirmatory reports x of the truth of
ino original statements, umerent ex
peditions were organized in the mean
, . time, by different parties, all of which,
" so far as the discovery of gold in quad
tity went, were successful. The de
tails of these expeditions, with their
, pecuniary results, are to be given in
full, I find, in the next Wetklu Colo
nist and as a large number will be
- cent over to Portland, it relieves, me of
the necessity of writing them up, as
your people wiirthus be enabled to
- learn the whole rmrticuIarsL - I find the
Colonist people are far better posted
than I am ou the matter ; and I can
fiafely recommend the perusal of the
x "History of the Peace Eiver Mines "
' appearing in the Colonist during the
last four or five days, and which as a!
ready stated, is, I am told, to be re
printed in the weekly to-morrow, for
general distribution at home and
abroad. t v
With reference to the final success
of these mines, upon the final triumph
of the political issues which now in no
small degree exercise this people, I am
happy to be able to confirm the partic
ulars given by the -writer in the Colo
nist to the fullest! extent. He follows.
4 in lact, ttre precise course for them. I
intended to follow, for you, with this
difference, that his information is both
more exact and copious than mine. I
. 1 1 . 1 1 ... ... r
, am void to-day, mat a committee ol
mercantile gentlemen of this city have
been intrusted with the publication in
question, and that the? hold themselves
responsible for every statement made..
In this case, you need not fear to use
the scissors freely if you feel so dis
posed. : ! a
There can be no doubt from the in-
formation in tne nap as oi inese gentle
men, that we are on the eve of the
greatest gold discovery ever made in
this colony, or perhaps upon the entire
coast, borne of the expeditionists fit
' ted out last summer at the public ex
pense, new acknowledge that Omineca
will prove, as far as rich gejierat-dig-gings
go, a pccond Califotma with an
Australia thrown in. Half of it will
be euough to make us al prosperous
&gaint and build the country up beyond
future reverse. Of course, Portland
will come in for the lion's share of the
trade that is, if she docs not allow the
. San Francisco men to get aheacTof her,
for we are told they are already making
arrangements in that grasping city to
do so. You must not forget that that
once proud and tyrannical city is stand
ing in great need of business jnst nowv
yr I have spoken with Mr , John Adair
wImv individually and by family con
nection, is so well known in Oregon,
upoa the subject, and, he jays, the
Statement in the Colonist are correct,
especially in connection with the expe
dition fitted out last summer by public ;
contributions to test the district thor
oughly, making $8,000 for six men in
thirty-five days' crude work, and that
the gross amount of native silver in
small pieces obtained during that period
from the sluice boxes, was, as stated in
the Colonist, over 35 ounces. I have
also seen the two ounce piece of. native
silver now in JVlr. Adair's possession.
It ia really a magnificent specimen.
He also assured me that its fineness
rung very high. Whether Omineca
will prove a second California, with ;an
Australia piled upon it, time must
prove ; but one thing is certain, in my
1 opinion, that if the right sort of Amer
ican prospectors go thither this sum
jner, there is a big chaoee of a second
Washoe being struck, irrespective of
the placer diggings.
You may bo assured, in conclusion,
i&4 the Peace Iiivc'r question has as-
sumod gigantic proportions. .The re
suit upon the final destiny of the col
ony cannot be duly estimated now ;
biit whether she goes immediately into
Canada, or finally to America, if these
mines realize bur present expectations,
she will be, Jrideed. a proe worth win-'

Thousands of persons, without specific ail

The unthinking are apt to confound this spe

ally arises from a want of organic energy, for
which the subject ia no more responsible than
the near sighted are for their defective vis
ion. Such persons, although they may be free
from pain, are as truly invalids, aad as much
in need of medical aid, a if they were tor
mented with the pangs of acute disease. They
require a toxic and altk&ativb, that will
rouse and regulate their torpid organizations.
In cases of this kind, HOSTETTER'S STOM
