JKW YEAR'S EVE.
BY J. A. CAM rBBLL.
Hark 'tis the Loom of the' midnight Im.11
RininK the old year's f nneral knell.
Bearing onr dreams to an endless tomb.
Gone to the ahadaa of oblivion's Bloom.
V
Tears for the old year, that's gone for aye.
To shades of night in the grave away.
Songs for the new year so young and fair
As spotless form in holy prsyer.
Crape for the year that is dying now.
Over the door and over the brow,
Bn is for the year that is being born.
Pure as the tint of a fair spring morn.
Hut! like strange and a mystic spell,
I hear the tones of the midnight bell.
Telling of seeds of a harvest sown.
To gather in when this life has flown.

Tbo number of Lills introduced
nuder the call of the Louse on
Wednesday reached 10CC. The va
riety and confusion of proponed
measures makes one dizzy. Every
conceivable proposition is burled
upon a defenceless legislative body.
A dozen or more measure baned on
the Blair bill were among the thou
sand of Wednesday. The bilvt-r
men were not idle, a is tibown by
the twenty-three tnea-surea presented
for the free coinage of nilver. Nearly
every member of the tobacco grow
ing states was armed with a measure
for the repeul of the tobacco tax,
while fcome of the more enthusiastic
went to the full length of the rope
with bills for the total wiping out of
the internal revenue ttystem.
One of the new bills provides for
the establishment of a "bureau of
appointment" to take the place of
the preKent civil service commission.
i This measure was introduced by
j Representative Cheadle of Indiana.
