lUE INDEPENDENT.
THURSDAY MAY 17, 1888
the cousty tickets
- Wo promised in last issue to re
view the old party tickets this week,
and we shall now do bo in a fair and
impartial manner as to the merits of
ach candidate, regardless of party.
Even whilg The Independent is a
republican paper and desires to see
the grand old party poll its entire
Btreugth for its nominees at the June
election, we shall not blindly pass
ewer or ignore the democratic
candidates. .First, we shall give a
brief aud truthful statemeut as to
the claims of the republican nomi
nees, individually, and point to their
Ctne3s or the positions sought.
Beginning at Mr. Tongue, nomi
nee for state senator, we find him to
be a man of business, a successful
lawyer, and a gentleman who would
ably represent the people of Wash
ington county in tho legislature, ir
respective of party. Ilis interests
are in close harmony with our agri
culturists and legislation that would
benefit him could not do otherwise
than benefit them. He owns and
operates several farms in the coun
ty, is one of our largest breeders of
blooded liorses, cattle and hogs, and
lias expended larje sums of money
in helping to place Washington
rountr in the front rank' of the
counties of the Pacific coast as a
breeder of all classes of blooded
stock. At his own expense he is
now maintaining a first class race
course for the development of speed
in our horses, where infant breeders
are given an equal opportunity with
himself for developing their young
horses sj they may be sold in the
markets at high prices for the car
riage and buggy. His interests lie
ho deeply in agriculture and stock
breeding that one may be pardoned
for asking: "Is he not more farmer
than lawyer?" As a farmer, ho is
the "most enthusiastic of them all."
As a lawyer, he has always been
true and faithful to his clients, and
' if he has made enemies, it was
through too great devotion to the
interests of his patrons. Mr
Tongue has the ability to represent
the people in every walk of life, and
will Dot be found wanting when
.they need a friend to fight for their
best interests in tho halls of the
Oregon legislature. Thirty years
of his life have been ppent among
us, and he has at all times been a
consistent republican, supporting
the ticket in its darkest hours ever
since he was old enough to vote.
The old party will show its appreci
ation at the polls.
The nominees for representatives
are Jesse C. Moore, Thomas Paulsen
and J. V. Pope. Mr. Moore has a
bout of friend?, is a capable man and
will be strongly supported at the
polls. More than a decade ago Mr.
Moore' served the people of this
county for many years as sheriff
and was always found on the side of
justice. Mr. Pope is highly spoken
of by his neighbors, is a member of
the Grand Army of the Republic
. and has always been on the side of
his country and its flag. Mr. Paul
sen has represented us in the legis
lature, was ever on the side of the
' people as arraigned against monop
olies, and was a live uieutb in the
last Oregon legislature. The people
do not fear to trust him to look after
their interests.
Mr. Eugene Hughes, the nominee
or clerk, is a trustworthy young
man, and is well qaulified for the
duties of that otliee. He is a son of
"Squire" Hughes, of Forest Grove,
and inherit Gae trair.a of manhood.
Eugene has voted and worked for the
republican ticket from the time he was
eld enough to cast a ballot, and has
manly claims oc his party. lie i a
fine penman, a fi rat -class hook keeper
and would be the riht man in the right
place. He was born and educated in
this county and would take great pride
in conducting the county business of hU
many friends and the public generally.
Mr. J. W. Morgan, the present clerk, at
tho last election received the largest vote
of any man on tho ticket. This may
be explained io the fact that Mr. Mor
gan was a Washington county boy. In
. casting their votes, the people of this
county will not bo unmindful of the
fact that Mr. Hughes is one of our sons,
and will give him a rousing vot at the
polls.
Mr. Willis Waggoner, nominee for
recorder, is one of the best penmen in
the county, has had years of experience
in the land office, clerk's office, and as
professional book-keeper. He, too, is a
G. A. R. man, having fought honorably
for the dear old flag.
Mr. P. M. Dennis, nominee for fcher
iff, is well qualified to conduct the rmsi
ness of that office, having been deputy
under bath G. NT Halo and IJ. P.
Cornelius, and is spoken of bv those
gentlemen ia the highest terms of com
mendation. Ho served four years in
the war of the rebellion, and is an hon
orable member of the Grand Army of
the Republic.
sMessrs. T. G. Todd and John .
Shute commissioners, have both occu
pied that position, and arc so well and
favorably known that anything we might
add would seem superfluous. The same
may be said of Dr. C. Smith, for super
intendent of schools, and J. C. Hall,
surveyor. These men have all been in
public life and stand high in the esteem
Yotars.
Mr. J. o. 'Vjgsner, nominee for
treasurer, has satisfactorily conducted
that office for four years,, is conscientious
and obliging, and will not "pet left" st
the polls.
Mr. J. J. Kuratli, aspirant for assessor,
is a German, an educated man, and ia
very popular both among his country
men and tbe public at large. Being
able to speak both English and German
fluently, he ia just the man for the po
sition, since we have a large foreign pop
ulation in the county. --
But we must pass on to the other
tickets, having already said more than
we intended to say when this article was
begun ; but to have said leas, we must
necessarily have been a democrat.
Mr. 8. B. Huston is the democratic
nominee for senator, and will poll the
strength of his party. lie Is a young
lawyer, and is meeting with very good
success in bis profession. He once be
longed in the republican ranks, but for
sook it for tbe democratic party, of
which he is now the acknowledged leader
in this county.
W. H. H . Myers received the nomina
tion for joint senator, and will be able
to tell the people more about himself iu
tbe canvass than would be possible for
us to do in the limited space at command.
He has regularly been sent to tbe third
house of the Oregon legislature every
session for the lat decade, and is sure to
go again.,
The representatives are Ira E. Purdin,
Ed. Schulmerick and Dr. Ward. These
gentlemen stand well b9jre their parly
and the public, and will receive the
deserved support of their party.
Mr. T. S. Weatherred, nomine for
clerk; is a good man, popular among his
associates, and is well-qualified to con
duct the duties of that office, but is io
the "hopeless minority." Sump, is a
fine fellow, but he is on the wrong side
of the river; he will not re me across in
the boat over there, and republicans can
not be expected to w!e the turbulent j
stir-urn lo l-riiiji him into ramp
r L. b-ig r, lor iccorder, i- a Wash
ington county hoy, and until receutlv
was in the republican camp. o we nre
infornietl. He i a son of Dr. Geiger, of
Forest Grove, one of our worthy pioneers,
nn1 i!l poll the strength of hi- rhosen
party. We tinderstsnl he t well
quslified for the position sought.
Mr. N. Ii. Mead is the nominee lor
sheriff, and a few years a;o run ahead of
bis ticket for that position. lie now
holds a position as guard in the state
penitentiary, and is well-qualified to fill
the position of sheriff.
Kenyon Crandull, an old-timer and u
wheel-horse in tbe democratic party, is
the nominee for treasurer. He would be
a safe man to entrust with the county
funds.
Philip Heal and It. Norman are the
nominees for county commissioners
They are both good men.
A. iJeverman is the aspirant for
ass-cssor, J. J. Johnson for school iiuper
intendent and W. W. Purdin for surveyor.
The; are all honorable men and have the
confidence of their neighbors.
We have omitted to give the candidates
for coroner. The republican nominee la
Dr. F. Crang. of Forest Grove, the
democratic candidate is Dr. F. M
ttooinson, 01 tseaverton. uoth are
worthy men.
Since our remarks have jrrowa to such
length, we must hasten to a close. The
prohibition nominees are published in
this issue, so we will only hastily con
sider the ticket. Nearly all the names
are familiar to tbe public, and an ex
tended notice is now impossible. Mr.
II. B. Luce, as editor, and R. II. Tyson,
in public life, are the most prominent.
Therefore we could say nothing but
what it already known to the public.
We have nothing to urge against any of
the nominees and believe them to be
earnest and conscientious men. -
An editorial writer io the Century
makes this cheerful statement: "The
golden time of the politician Lapaivied
in thU country. We are entering on
au era in which he must play a minor
part. We have saved the Union, and
now turn our attention to the problem of
how best to govern it. Reform in our
electoral methods, the regulation or the
suppression of the lirjuor traffic, and i
tellii.vnt consideration of the tariff!rob-

every state these are the jrr5orr.in topics.

.The members of the Grange in
California have run a bank success

of tbe California Vatron says:
"The Grangers' bank will com-t

next month. The last statement of
the directors shows that the bank
has a paid-up capital of $000,000,
with a surplus of $40,000. It has
paid dividends every year siuce its
organization, and ths dividends
amount in the aggregate to over half
a million dollars, equal to fifty dol
