'What have you observed about tha
present campaign !" nked an Oregon ian
reporter yeterday of Hon. Rufus Mal
lory, who had just returned from speech-
making up the valley .
"I may ay," was the answer, "that I
have never observed a time when repub
licans were more anxious to have thcd
party succeed. The part j is well united.
I can't recall the time when their was o
much harmony and unity of purpose. AH
eem to realize the importance of vinz
the United States scuate. I have fsiled
to observe the least ign of dissatUfac
tion, except among the few republican!
who have gone off on the prohibition
idea. Their is a studied effort among
the democrats, who are assuming to be
iu harmony with the prohibitionists, to
draw as many republican as possible
into promiueoce.
"This was demonstrated at Hillsboro
at a meeting to choose delegates to the
county prohibition convention. There
was a preacher in the meeting who had
formerly acted w ith the democracy, and
he wai very forward in the matter of
conducting business. He left no op
portunity for anybody else to make a
speech or nominate a delegate. He was
always on hit feet first, and as a result
nearly every one of the delegates was a
republican. ,
I had been told of this before I spoke
at Hillsboro last night; so I took the
opportunity to address myself to such of
n.y audience as felt inclined to wander
otf towards prohibition, and without
mentioning names I referred somewhat
severely to the action of professed pro
hibitionists of democratic persuasion
who were using every effort to defeat the
republican party. After the meeting
closed several of my friends congratu
lated me in the cu-ternary way, and one
gentleman remarked: I tell you it
tickled me when you hit him.'
"Hit whom?" I asked in surprise.
"And then they told mc that the
democratic preacher, who had Ik en so
officious at the prohibition meeting, bad
been sitting on the front beat all evening.

lished his card. We did say, believing
itf-to be the fart then, lhe item having
slipped our memory it being of no
serious consequence and relegated to the
outside page of the paper that we had
not published the funny item fiom the
Statesman, hence, the publication of the
card was uncalled for. He was in
doubt himself as to the item Ix-ing pub
lished in this paper, and we did not ex
amine the tile. We leave our readers
to judge of Mr. Webb' "manly" qual
ities from the tone of his letter. As
regards "courage." we have neither fear
nor respect for the man who deseeratr
the title of "Reverend"' while eiigNgcd
in a political canvass. Hut we will say
Mr. Webb dare iot utter in this oflice
the words he transmits to us through
another for publication. In publishing
his vituperation, we feel called un to
offer an apology for allowing u h
coarse language to appear in tl e column
of this paper, even if it doe emanate
from' the brain of the leader of a '-moral
party," and a disciple of Christ. - Ko i
