l The alarming disease of tbis
country is nerv ous debility and
prostration. It goe? tmiior
many nrmies lmt it ia rsen
tially the same complaint.
Hospital and private institu
tions for itervou patients are
crowded. The average of life
in the United States de
creasing every year. Sudden
deaths from nervous, collapse
among our business, profess
ional a ad public men are so
frequent a scarcely to excite
remark. The majority of sui
cides, committed without ar
pareut reason, or under so-called
;'depre:-vion of spirits," are
really prompted by nervous
prostration, which is a fruitful
source of insanity and crime
with all their grief and horror.
' 'fhese facts are startling.
They threaten the very life of
the nation. They assail the
spring of its power and pros
perity. They wreck manhood's
strength and woman's useful
lies aud beauty.
j Every one should know the
causes. What are they ? The
answer is easy and terribly
plain: Our vicious personal
habits; our careless and la wlesf i
eating and drinking; the in
tense mental and physical strain
arising from our mad racv after
money, position and iniimmce;
the fears and struggles of jov
erty ; the use of narcotics aud
stimulants; our faction of
turning day into nit;.t and
liight into day; and, briefly,
our 9 desperate willingness to
pay any price for an hour's
pleasure or STt-vess. So we

even when there is no emaci

l Nervous prostration sends
out its warnings: headache
in the morning; a persistent
dull heaviness or aching at the
base of the brain; wakeiulne ;
loss of ap(etite and disgust wi t h
food ; los s of mental energy and
interest in ordinary duties and
business; restlessness and anx
iety without any assignable
reason; eructations ; bad
breath ; foul mucous on the
teeth ; occasional giddiness ;
palpitation of the heart; shal
lowness of the akin; coated
tongue and gradual failure of
strength aud ambition.

Chicago Tribune : Judge ary
was hearing a case that called for a
jury trial, and after the usual
wrangling that always tries the
patience the jury was secured and
sworn. The judge settled back in
his chair, thinking that the case was
fairly started, when up jumped a
little iennan who was sitting in one
end of the jury box. "Shudge!"
he exclaimed. "Well, what is it?"
asked the judge, shortly. "Shudge,
I t'ink. I like to go home." You
cau't go. Sit down!" "Shudge, I
doan' t'ink I make a good shuror."
"You're the best on the panel. Sit
down." "Well, shudge," and the
little fellow waa getting desperate,
"I doan' spheak good English."
"You'll not have to speak any at
all." "And shudge, I can't make
nodings oudt of vot dose fellers,"
indicating the attorneys, "are talk

Neither can any one elae. Sit

A remark a short time ago by
Senator Jones of Arkansas to the
effect that the admission of Dakota
was a question requiring grave con
sideration and one which he could
not decide iu advance of discussion,
leads Ex-Gov. Pierce, of the Pioneer
Press, to institute some comparisons
between Arkansas and Dakota of a
kind to make the senator ashamed
of himself and of his state. Here
they are :
Arkansas has been a state for
over fifty years, and to-day she has
SOO.OOU inhabitants to Dakota's
;."s .(((. She lias 21 M miles of
r.iiliea.l, while InLota has 42-HJ.
She expends $t; 1,1)00 annually for
public school, while Dakota ex
pends $2,000,000. She employs
lNOo school teachers, while Dakota
employs r000. She has lf6 news
papers, while Dakota has !f2. In
only ime thing does Arkansas sur
pass Dakota, and that is in the per
centage of persons who cannot read
and write. In this she stands in;
the ralio of 08 to 5."
I he statement tlmt Mr. ConLlin
left no "will" will be acceptetl. in
j the present state of our jnri9pru
I lenoe, as n evidence of the sa-
gaeity ami self-respect of that emi
jnentiimn. The making of a will
j umter the New York laws is little
more than offering a premium to
j robbery ami defamation. For, un
less the will is made to suit the
I whim or cupidity of every adven
turer whom the testator may have
avoided during life, it is sure to be
contested. The savings of a life
time will go to the lawyers; the
sacred piivacy of home will be des
ecrated in the ribald atmosphere of
it court; the wise purpose of the
sanest man that ever lived will be
distorted and destroyed. Mr. 4'onk
ling was wise to leave no will. The
vultures will have no feasting upon
his estate and his fame. N. Y.

A prominent Fnjjlifh woman says the
