' John Sherman wrote one letter
too many a few years ago. A citizen
of Ohio went to Mexico to engage in
business. He was, as lie conceived,
badly treated by the Mexican author
ities. He wrote a letter to Mr.
Sherman, asking him to call the
attention of the state department to
the matter. Mr. Sherman replied
in a letter, one sentence of which
reads thus: "A man who is fool
enough to invest his money in a
God-forsaken country like Mexico
has no right to expect protection
from his own or any other govern
ment." The letter is still in posses

was addressed. He lives near
