THURSDAY APRIL 5. 1 88S
STATE VEMOCJiA TIC COXYESTtOS.
The state democratic convention
lias nominated John M. (Jearin, of
Portland, for congressman, and
Judge John Burnett, of Benton
county, for supreme judge. Mr.
A. Bush, of Salem, was elected
chairman of the state central com
mittee, much to the disgust of the
supporters of Mr. B. Killin, of Port
land. The following gentleman
were the choice of the convention
for presidential electors: W. II.
Effinger, Portland; V. R. Bilyeu,
Iiinn county; K. R. Skipworth,
Umatilla county.
Mr. Oearin, nominee for congress,
was enthused for the occasion, and
responded to his nomination in the
following certain language, which is
intended to strike terror to the
hearts of republicans, who are to be
loaded down with free wool and
taxed to death with the clothing
they wear:
"You have asked me to lead the
ticket, and I'll do it. It makes no
difference who is nominated by the
republicans, I will be the next con
gressman from Oregon. All differ-
ences between the delegates as to
choice of nominee are now fettled.

We have carefully examined the
circular issued by the Brotherhood
of Locomotive Engineers, remarks
the Timea-Mouyilainerr, in. relation
to the C. B. & Q. Thoir reasons for
the action they have taken are such
as will convince all unprejudiced
minds of the justness of their de
mands. They simply desired the
same rates and classification that
were granted by other roads, and
these were only fair and just. It
appears the C. B. & Q. has carried
out the most outrageous and selfish
policy in its dealings with its em
ployes, and when asked by the
grievance committee of the brother
hood to discuss the matter with
them, acted the part of the tyrant
and despot and absolutely refused
any arbitration. If, as a principle
of right, railroads can pay engi
neers, firemen, etc., what wages they
please, it is on the same principle
that employes have the privilege to
refuse to work for what they consid
er inadequate remuneration. And,
if the carrying out of these inalien
able rights the traffic of the country
suffers damage, the party which re
fuses to accede to the ordinary rules
of right and justice is the only one
to blame. The engineers constitut
ing the brotherhood are men of in
telligence and skill, and the organi
zation has adopted wise rules to in
sure safety and security to the lives
of passengers and to property of
shippers. The public is fully aware
of these facts, and the moral senti
ment of the country, aside from the
cringing, servile element which con- j
tantly pays homage to capital and 1
purse-proud aristocrats, will support
the engineers in this movement.
TA VETO POWER.
Senator Dolph is paving his way
for a successful career in the United
States Senate, the East Oregonian to
the contrary notwithstanding.

Bat where is the Cascades Locks
fund? Eat Oregonian.
The last heard of the Cascades
Locks fund, it was pocketed by
President Cleveland. 7Knis-M -taineer.
Cleveland still thinks his pocket
is big enough to hold the party and
leave ample room for a second veto
document.
We have received a long letter on
the tariff, but owing to our limited
space through increased correspond
ence, cannot give it publication.
The writer does not neriously ob
ject to the present tariff, and deals
principally with monetary questions
involving the payment of high rates
of interest. Exorbitant rates of in
terest, he says, is what is ruining
our country. The rate is too hi.th
for manufactories to flourish on bor
rowed capital. But how to remedy
this evil is not apparent to the
Average mind. When it comes to
a solution of this question, we all
go down.
Col. John P. Irish has electrified
the democracy in Oregon. The
campaign songs will now be, with
slight variations, "Me father and
znither were Irish, and we are for
lrtih too."
In the big round-up of steers in
.Eastern Oregon, the cattle stamped
ed upon the sheep-grazing grounds,
causing great damage to the wool
clip and threatening the lambing
industry with destruction.
Inquiry has been as to the signifi
cance of the iron cross the late Em
peror William was so desirous to
have buried with him. The iron
cross is the chief badge of military
service, and was conferred upon
William when he was a prince by
his brother, then emperor, for great
bravery and soldierly conduct. This
was in 1849, when he was given su
preme command of the royal forces
when Baden and the Palatinate
rushed into arms cainst constituted
authority. The cross w.as more
prized by him because he had been
recalled from banishment he was
banished by imperial order in 1848
nnd the order pour le mente better
than his recall attested his restora-
tion to favor. The order of the

the democratic party ought to be
able to sustain itself without the aid
of imported bombast.
