The alarming disease of this
country is nervous debility and
prostration. It oea under
many names but it is essen
tially tbe same complaint.
Hospitals and private institu
tions for nervous patients are
crowded. The average of life
in the United Starts is de
creasing every year. Sudden
deaths from nervous collapse
among our business, profess
ional aud public tnien are
frequent as scarcely to excite
remark. The majority of eui
cides, committed without ap
parent reason, or under so-call-d
depression of spirit," are
really prompted by nervous
prostration, which is a fruitful
source of insanity and crime
with all their grief and horror.
These facts are startling.
They threaten the very life of
the nation. They assail the
springs of its power and pros--perity.
They wreck manhood's
strength ana woman's useful
ness and beauty.
Every one should know the
causes. What are they ? The
answer is easy and terribly
plain: Our vicious persona
tabits ; our careless and lawless .
eating and drinking; the in
tense mental and physical strain
arising from our mad ract after
money, position and influence;
the fears and struggles of pov
erty ; the use of narcotics aud
stimulants; our fashion of
turning day into nk;ht and
night into day; and, brietiy,
our . desperate willingness to
pay any price for an hour's
pleasure or success. So we
Dura life's candle at both ends
and fill the lunatic asylums
and the graveyards.
The disease from which we
suffer and die is, in plain Eng
lish, Xeriwis &yspep3uty ,s it
is seated in the IServea and in
the ovgans of Digestion, Assim
ilation and Nutrition. Healrhy
digestion being impelled or des
troyed, the whole body, nerves
included, i3 literal ft starved;
even when there is no emaci
ation to tell the sad story,
i Nervous prostration sends
tput its warnings: headache
in the morning; a persistent
dull heaviness or aching at the
base of the brain ; wakefulness ;
loss of appetite aud disgust with
food ; loss of mental energy and
interest in ordinary duties and
business; restlessness and anx
iety .without any iguable
reason; en: isfions; bad

in each mt'.i ruse, and the
use of Shaker Kxlracl of Hoots
(Seigel's Syrup) to cure the
mischief already done. This
ereat remedy, prepared by the
Shaker Community of Mt. Leb
anon, N. V., is especially adapt
ed to eradicate Nervous l)ys-
Sepsia. To do this it acts
irectly and gently but rxnver
f ully upon the disordered stom
ach, liver and kidneys, restor
ing their tone and vigor, pro
moting the secretion of bile, ex
pelling waste matters from the
system,and purifying the blood.
. Upon the nervous system
Shaker Extract(SegeVs&yiui))
acts as a safe and wholesome
. anodyne without the slightest
narcotic effect, and then leaves
the nerves to regain their nat
ural tone and strength through
its wonderful iniiuene upou
the function of nutrition.
) It is safe to say more nerv
ous dvspeptics have been re
stored by it from the depths
of misery to n tie-u enjoyment
of life and hdoi than by any
or all other form of treatment
combined. . .

DEFEAT OF SEAL DOW.
The defeat of Neal Dow, tlie no
toiious champion of prohibition, for
the mayoralty of Portland, Maine, is ;
significant of the manner of the
coming campaign, and of the result
in that state and in others. The
democrats supported Iow, yet he
was defeated by over 1C00 majority.
Deal Dow has never been a demo
crat. He was formerly a zealous
abolitionist, lie has been for years
a zealot and a fanatic in the cause of
prohibition. Until this year, in
elections, in which his pet hobby
was not directly involved, he voted
with the republicans. Jfo is now
turned against the party because he
could not bring its leaders and con
ventions to incorporate prohibition
in its platforms, and has made alli
ance with the democrats to do all
the harm he can to the whole repub
lican party. St. John is in accord
with him. But St. John is actuated
by mercenary considerations. He
found it so profitable in 1884, that
he hopes to make the campaign of
this year even more lucrative.
Hence he i aiding the democrats.
The fact that iu Neal Dow's own
home, in the city of Portland, with
all the democratic vote to his sup
port, for muyor, he has been beaten
by an unusually large majority by
the republican candidate, is a mani
festation of the popular sentiment
as regards the unholy alliance.
Democracy and prohibition! AVhati
an affiliation? The "combine" will
not win. Xews.

CiitNTiuv, March 10 The Cjht be i

The tight was a deeper, tte ot;e and both

the referee declared the tight a draw,
i iKTAii.s or thk mutr.
hiNimx, March 10. The Mitchell
Sullivan tiht took place on the ground--of
Ilaron liothschilds near t'riel.
Sullivan was out r.f condition when he
entered the ring, and Mitchell has the
hest of the tiht. His friends aert that
he would have won had the tilit been
continued.
The battle lasted a little over three
hours.
Up to the eighth round Sullivan ap
peared to have the best of the light, but
the fact that he could not knoc k Mitchell
out seemed to discourage him, ami after
that he fought with little spirit.
Mitchell showed great pluck through
out, and his friends are jubilant, as the
result is virtually a victory for the little
Englishman.
At the end of the tiyht both men were
in poor shape, and Mitchell's backers
finally consented to the proposition
made by Sullivan's I ackerc that the
fight be dechued a draw .
The American crowd is blue.
Sullivan's friends are utterly unable to
explain why he did not do Iwtter.
iJoth men's hands were in a terrible
shape at the end of the light.
Mitchell seemed to improve as the
fight went on. He fotight carefully and
kept out of Sullivan's reach as much as
possible.
IJetting was even at the end of the
thirty-eight round.

The recent exploit of Mr. William
