THE TERRIBLE STORM.
Hundreds of People Frozen to Death
Appeals for Aid.
Chicago, Jan. 16. The great
storm which swept oyer the en
tire country last week has been fol
lowed by a freeze, the like of which
has not been experienced since the
memorable winter of 1864. Ex
treme suffering is reported from all
directions, especially in Minnesota,
Dakota, Montana and Nebraska,
where many lives have been lost.
In Kansas thousands are suffering
for want of food and fuel. The
storm, while less severe in the south
ern states, still found the people
there unprepored for it, and much
suffering has resulted.
Dispatches from the Northwest
report 125 fatalities already. At
Aberdeen, Dak., Bessie Stansfield,
a pretty 19 year old teacher, three
miles distant, left school during the
storm to go to a farmer's house,
thirty yards distant. Her dead
body was found nearly a mile from
the schoolhouse.
Four children frozen to death io
a schoolhouse at Mellette. The
teacher left them to get assistance,
and her body has not yet been
found. Steubierner, another teach
er, twelve miles northwest of Aber
deen, was out all night in the bliz
zard. When found she was barely
alive, and died shortly afterwards.
William Morell, six miles west, went
out of his houso Tuesday evening to
go to his barn. He became con
fused, and was found dead two miles
away.
H. S. Chapin, collector for a
threshing machine firm, left Kerth
ville Thursday morning with a liv
ery man to visit farmers near by.
They have not been heard from,
and are probably dead.
O. T. Owens and wife, of Went
worth. Dak., were lost on the prairie
Friday night, and when found Mrs.
Owens was dead and he badly
frozen.
Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 19. Sat
urday and Sunday nights were the
coldest ever experienced in this sec
. tion, the thermometer registering 19
degrees below zero at one time.
Reports of cases of freezing from
points in Kansas are appalling. The
blizzard that raged through this sec
tion a few weeks ago left people in
an exhausted condition. It is esti
mated that 3000 people in Clark
county are in a destitute condition.
The Presbyterian minister at
-HartfoTd.-Kearney county, writes to
the aid soicety, imploring assistance
for that section, saying, "If relief
does not come soon hundreds will
die."
Specials from defferent points in
dicate that casualties among the
stock have been greater than ever
known in Kansas. Horses and
cattle have perished in their stalls.
Two trains of cattle coming in on
the Missouri Pacific railroad were
caught in a blizzard and every ani
mal was frozen to death.
Firtjnine Degrees llelow Zero.
Helena, Tan. 15. This morning
at 5 o'clock the thermometer regis
tered 45 below zero. The highest
point reached during the day was
25 below. At Belgrade, east of
hare, it was 59 below Friday night,
with stock suffering. Dispatches
from Northern Montana show abate
ment in the cold, with westerly
winds and a prospect of a chinook.

Modern Cooking and Mod

on. It comes upon us una
wares. The patients have
pains about the chest and sides,
and sometimes in the back.
They feel dull and sleepy; the
mouth has a bad taste, especi
ally in the morning. A sort
of sticky slime collects about
the teeth. The appetite is pofor.
There is a feeling like a heavy
load on the stomach ; sometimes
a faint, all-gone sensation at
the pit of the stomach which
food does riot satisfy. The
eyes are sunken, the hands
and feet become cold and feel
clammy. After a while a
cough sets in, at first dry, but
after a few months it is at
tended with a greeni-h colored
expectoration. The patient
feels tired all the while, and
sleep docs not seem to afford
any rest. After a time he be

of our population lias this dis

The effect of this remedy is
simply marvelous. Millions

the testimonials in favor of its

An expert and experienced official
in an insane asylum said to us a
little time since, that these institu
tions aro filled with people who
Lave given up to their feelings, and
that no one is quite safe from an
insane asylum who allows himself to
give up to his feelings. The im
portance of this fact is altogether
too little appreciated, especially by
teachers. "We are always talking
about the negative virtues of dis
cipline, but we rarely ppeak of the
positive virtues. We discipline the
schools to keep the children from
mischief, to maintain good order, to
have things quiet, to enable the
children to study. We say, and 6ay
rightly, that there cannot be a good ;
school without good discipline. We
do not, however, emphasize as we
should the fact that the discipline
of the school, when rightly done, is
as vital to the future good of the
child as the Iessous he learns.
Discipline of the right kind is as
good mental training as arithmetic.
It is not of the right kind unless it
requires intellectual effort, mental
conquests. The experienced expert
referred to above, was led to make
the remark to us by seeing a girl
give way to the ".sulks." "That
makes insane women." she remarked,
and told the story of a woman in an
asylum who used to sulk until she
became desperate, and the expert
said, "You must stop it. You must
control yourself." To which the
woman replied, "The time to say
that was when I was a girl. I never
controlled myself when I was well.
i ami now I cannot." The teacher

ier disciplinary duty, than she
suspects. The pupils are not only
to Le controlled, but they must be
taught to control themselves,
absolutely, honestly, completely.

Marriasre r I'oyal Cousin.
Marriage of royal cousins in royal
families is the rule rather tban the
exception, and yet the announce
ment that Queen Vicioria will, in
February, attend the wediting of
two of her grandchildren will strike
most people unfavorable. What
royalty indulged in without remark
a number of years ago offends the
better intelligence of to-day.
The Princess Irene of Hesse, the
daughter of the late Princess Alice
of England, is to be wedded next
month to Prince Henry, the second
son of the Princess Victoria of
England, Crown Princess of Ger
many. They are firt cousins, be
sides being cousins beyond that of
innumerable shades of consanguin
ity. The objection to these inter
marriages between individuals close
ly related by blood is pointedly in
dicated by the percentage of de
ficient and insaue Members of roval
families where the practice most
prevails. It is also shown by the
number of extinct titles found in the
record of the much iuterlated British
peerage, whose existence almost
seems to depend upon its infusion
of new blood.
And still it is unlawful in England '
for a man to marry his deceased j
wife's f-ister. The traditional and
generally obsolete ecclesiastical ob- j
jection remain? a bar. while thej
scientric physiological objection goes
for naught.
