    The Russian Grain Crop.
F r ora the official report of tho
Russian harvest just made public it
appears that the pre\i >ns alvire-j of
tiie partial failure of the wheat crop
were true, although c\a*i^eratetl.
But the ^00(1 crops of tho interior
provinces of the Empire cannot
compensate for the almost complete
failure of the crop in the southern
part of the country. Western Eu
rope ha-» drawn largely for years
from the southern provinces, which'
arc easily accessible. In that section
comparatively no grain will be avail
able for export the present season.
The fact that the crop of tho inter
io r was satisfactory will be of little
benefit to the distant countries need
ing foreign supplies. We know in
this country how largely the o -t ot
. transportation to the seaboard enters
into the question regarding how
much grain will l>e shipped abroad
in any one season. In Russia, 1 m > w-
ever, they are much more deficient
in facilities for getting the products
to the seaboard than wo are. They
have no largo lakes or favorably-
located rivers, and the number <>1
railways now in operation is insignif
icant
wlieq compared w di the
breadth of the country that has to
I k * accommodated by them.
The fact, therefore, that tho yield
of some of the northern and central
provinces is hotter tlran was at first
anticipated,will not materially change
the* prospect regarding tin* foo 1 sap-
ply required to satisfy tho demands
of the countries in which the harvest
is known to be largely d •tu ient.
But it may bo anticipated th it !i ig-
lish and French buyers will turn
this favorable circumstance to the
b st possible u*e iu their efforts t<
keep down the price of grain. For
a time they raav sitiveed in depress-
sing values, but when consumers
learn by dear experience the cost of
moving property from the favored
provinces of interior Prussia, it is
probable that the grain averages of
the leading European markets will
advance in spite of the effort of the
bears to keep them down.— Buffalo

How to Buy a Horse.
From the advance sheets of lo w
AY. H. Murray’s new book on “ The
Horse,” we extract the following:
Be Hire that the horse you pur
chase has symetry, viz: is well pro
portioned throughout. Never pur
chase a horse because he lias a
splendid development of one part
•>f his organization, if he is lacking
in any other. Above all keep well
in mind what you are buying for,
and buy the horse best adapted to
the w ork you will require of him;
and when such an animal is yours be
content. Never jockey. An occa
sional exchange may be allowable;
out this daily “ swapping ” of horses
advertises a man's incompetency for
anything higher. Another caution
is this: Never purchase a horse un
til you have seen him move, and un
der the same conditions to which lie
will be exposed in the service you
will expect of him. I f for draft,
sec him draw, back, and draw round
in both directions; if for the road,
see how he handles himself, not,
merely on level ground, but going
up sharp declivities, and, above nil,
fc descending them. In this way
you will ascertain the faults or excel
lencies of both his temper and struc
ture.
Iq these exercises drive him yonr-
relf. The reins in a skillful hand,
aide 1 by the whip or mouth, can be
nia lo to conceal grave defects. Let
him move with a loose rein, so that
he may take his natural gait, and
not his artificial; for, by so doing,
you will detect any mistake of judg-
inent y >u may have made in looking
him over in a state of inactivity.
Many a time unsoundness will ap
pear in motion, which no inspection
<>f the eye or finger, however close,
can aicertain.
When you have
walked him and jogged him, if he is
in f;cTve in any other than mere
draft purposes, p it him to his speed,
and keep him at it for a sufficient
distance to test his breathing ca
pacity; tlu-n pall him up; jump from
