Knc.i.isii sparrows in Illinois,
are now to be put to the te-t of a
war of extermination, by a law tor
their heads. Over a thoiisan 1 of
their beads fell upon the county

day of the law's operation. The
sparrow will probably runic out
victorious in spite of the two tents

The peculiarities that some
times crop out in the art ion of

In jr ag. nts. It leads the Indian
apolis Sentinel to say that the
remedy would seem to lie in n
strict license system for the man
ufacture, trunspoitatioii and use
of the dangerous products, which
might, it would seem, bo made as
the regulations which so nearly
prevent illicit distilling and
eounterfcitiii'j. In this connection
the regulation of the manufacture,
sale and use of pocket weapons
should be undertaken. It is
notorious th:it a largij majority of
the murders committed in this
country are the direct outcome of
llie pernicious custom ot carrying
pocket weapon. In comparison
with the number of people who
carry weapons the numlier who
have real necessity to carry them
is almost intinitesiu.il, an 1 il those
who have no lawful need lor them
did not carrv them, the number
who now need to carry them would
be still farther leduced. It is
possible th.it a solution of this
whole problem ia beyond t lie
reach of legislation; that until
humanity is educated to hold
human lile at a higher value no
remedy can 1 e found. Rut it is a
pity that sonic of man's mo.-t, use-
ful and valuable agents should be
perverted to the use of maniacs,
fanatics and criminal.1.

Between the supreme courts of
Iowa and Illinois, there exists
considerable dillercnce of opinion,
at least so it would seem from the
difference ot view that t:ikes upon
the same subject. A dispute has
arisen between them as to whether
the boundary line at Keokuk lies
in the middle of the Mississippi
river, or in the middle of the
navigable channel. The Iowa
supreme court has decidtd that the
former is tho cau-e. while the
Illinois courts hold to the hitter.
The real sufferer from the dispute
ia the company owning the bridge
tbat crosses it that point, for the
Illinois claims taxes on by far the
larger part of the bridge, and the
Iowa assessors levy taxcg as far
east as the middle of the river bed,
anil the company has to pay
double taxes on a part of its
property. A puit to determine
which state is riuht has been
brought in the I'nitcd States
supreme court by the governor of
the two statas. ,
