The Marion county democrats
are agitating the matter of start
inn a democratic daily paper, at
Salem, to advocate tho democratic
cause. They had better let the
matter rest, for daily papers are
expensive things, and if started

penny whistle against some of the

Willamette valley this winter.

A Small Boy the t'aune,
A citizen of this city several

cow browsing regularly each even
ing upon the grass on his lot. He
watched operations and saw that

evening upon the grass plat. He
quietly tied the cow in his own
tarn and milked her to get pay for
the grass. The owner finally sent
for her, and explained by saying
that a small boy who attended to

justice Humphrey's court yester
day. Hon. J. K. Weatherford ap

afler hearing the evidence im
posed a line of $20 anil costs,

will prohably be appealed.

Mis. New ton Houston, a pioneer
woman well known In Linn county,
died at her home near this city on
Tuesday. I'ec. L'2, after a lingering

deceased was a sister of Mrs. W.
W. Parish, of Sodaville. She was
an cstimahle woman, and leaves a
husband, several children ami
many friends to mourn her death.
The funeral will occur to-day,
when the remains will be buried
in the ceine'ery east of the city.

Rev. Aldridge of Brownsville,
assisted by Revs. Wallace of
Monroa Houston and Plackwell,
of Junction, has been holding a
very successful revival here for the
past four weeks, ijuite a number
have been converted and a great
deal of interest is still being nianu-fested.

The Oswego Iron Worker is
authority for the statement that
at Stewart's switch, one mile this
side of Sherwood, there are sev
eral camps of Chinese woodchop
jters. Sunday night last, between
the hours of 1 and 2 o'clock, one
of these camps, w here there were
five Chinamen sleeping soundly in
a tent, was attacked by two men
with rilles. The assailants tired
through the tent from o0 to 40
shots from a short distance away
The Mongolians dared not stir
until the firing ceased, when they
p. S.ted out and saw two forms dis
appearini:. They alto perceived a
burning fuse, aud with suspicion
at once aroused ran to the spot.
They found two bags each contain
ing alout four pounds of giant
powder, w hich had been enclosed
by pieces of overall. They then
got out of the vicinity, but re
turned on the following day. They
are building a high lence around
their camp and are armed to the
teeth. It is a miracle that they
escaped death Sunday night. The
tent was riddled by bullets. The
parties are supposed to be known.

an examination for postotlice
clerks. The Cregonian says that
Mr. K. P. Southard, secretary of
the board of civil service exain
ineis has received a communica
tion from President Lyman, of the
civil service commission, informing
him that the commission has
ordered that a new subject be
added to the postotlice cleik ex
amination to le held thc:e on
February 2. This will be designat
ed. "'Heading address." The ap
plicant will be given some lifty
cards and letters in every style of
writing, to display bis capacity
for reading such addresses. To
the subject cf geography will be
added '"local delivery," requesting
the applicant to anser questions
as to the location of stieets, the
business houstson different streets
etc. These added subjects will aj
pear in the papers used in the
eo.iung Februaiy examination
and are important things for a
pontoilice clerk.

The Willamette Falls Electric
Company is constructing a rein
forcing Hume around the guard
locks across the river in crder
that the water drawn from the
canal for power purposes may not

gation. It will consist of a Hume
twenty feet wide, five feet deep,
and nearly uUO feet long. It will
take several weeks to construct
the improvement, which will cost
about $2500.

It is learned that the syndicate
who bought Messrs. Punkerifc Sel
over's stock in the Portland smel
ter are preparing to Btart up the
worxs and run them for all there
is in them. They are satisfied
that money is to be made by oper
ating the works and have already
received 150 tons of lead ore from
Co-ur d' Alene tc work up the ore
already on hand. The syndicate
is composed of some of the best
business men in the city, and they
have command of all the capital
needed, and it goes without saying
that they can run a smelter suc
cessfully if any one can.

It has been announced that half
of J the Montana diamond fields
have been sold in Kngland. The
fields have an area of 8,000 acres,
and consist chielly of bars that ex
tend for fifteen miles on the Mis
souri. These bars are about til
teen miles from Helena, and are
said to yield ruhies, sapphires and
gold. The productiveness has to
be determined by actual workings.
No one can say that the precious
stones are "in sight," in the min
ing sense of the phrase.

A St. Louis physiciau has made
a curious contract. An heiress to
a great fortune in that city. Miss
Pauline Hoeml, has been alllicted
with a disease of the mind since
her childhood, and the doctor has
