Killed a Panther.
The Grant's Tass Courier relates
how Aleck Ceorge killed a big
panther near Kerby last week. His
father heard a pig squeal and went
out to see w hat the matter was
and found the panther eating fresh
pork. He called George and his
rifle out and despatched the
depredator instanter. The brute
was full grown and miaufel over
nine feet.
Valuable Preaent.
Mr. David Froman resented
his adopted daughter Mrs. W. W.
Parriab with an elegant phaeton
buggy, horse and harness. Mr.
Parnsh was iu the city yesterday
to receive and take the valuable
present out to his wife. Mr.
Froman has the reputation of being
a whole-souled citizen and he
never does things by halves, and
when he makes a piesent he makes
it of value.
ACCIDENT AT THE FERRY.

Yesterday inoiniug, when the
ferryboat was alout the middle of
the river the cable parted, and the
boat started down the liver. The
only vaseenger at the time was
Mrs. Rainwater, who was piompt
ly taken ashore by the ferryman,
Mr, levine. Fortunately there
were no teams on board. The boat
was overtaken and stopped before
reaching the Oregon Pacific bridge
and will be brought back to i 8
place without much trouble.
The break was caused from a
strain received upon its cable sev
eral days ago by the steamer Mo
doc running against it. The dam
age to the ferry company was
aoout $75 or $100. The cable will
he spliced, and it is thought will
be ready for use by tLis evening
or to-monow. Several teamsters
and their team from this side w ho
were engaged in hauling gravel,
were caught on tha other side and
have no means of returning with
out going up the river via Corval
1U. They have procured quarters
u the other side and will wait till
the break is repaired.
GRAND MASQUERADE BALL.

While not quite so many houses

are a great credit to the city. The

and several thousands for laterals,

gether, a credit to the city, one
that will be more so when all
property-owners have connected
with them. The big bridge will be

it at the poker table. His thelt
was discovered, but instead of
having the culprit arrested the
firm give him some good advice
and a check for $50, with instruc

jumping at the chance to get away
from the scene of his disgrace, the
ungrateful man went back to the
poker room and lost the $50 check.
Then his old employers bought
him a ticket for Portland, put him
on the train and saw him oil', after
which they caused the poker dens
to be raided.

pressive cantata.
An Antique Belle.
The Dalles Sun says that Mr. K
McNeil, general superintendent of
the Pacific division ot the Union
Pacific system, is the fortunate
possessor of an Indian relic un
earthed at Umatilla some time
ago, and which now ornaments his
ollice at Portland. It is a stone
vessel of some sort, hollow ed out,
most elaborately carved and evi
dently at one time in the posses
sion of some great chief or titled
warrior. It was found six feet bt-
neath the earth's surface at Uma
tilla by a workman engaged in
making an excavation for a new
house. The elaborate carving of
this vessel shows that the maker
must have been possessed of true
artistx genius, the accuracy of the
carted lines being something won
derful. One side of the vessel is
fashionc d to resemble an animal's
head, but of what particular
species it would be hard to deter
mine, while the work, seems similar
to that found among the Indians
at Queen Charlotte island or in
Alaska. The relic was given to
Superintendent McNeil by James
Vetera, a roaamaster in the em
ploy of the company on whose
premises it was found. Itisprob
ably the finest specimen of Indian
antiquity yet unearthed in this
state.
Skeletons Unearthed.
An account published in the
Pendleton East Oregonian savs
that while Frank Snvder, a 14-
year-old boy, was driving cows
across an unoccupied field about
four miles below Milton a few
days ago, he saw the skull of a
human skelton which had recently
been uncovered by toe winds blow
ing the dirt away from it. He re'
ported the discovery to some Mil
ton people, who immediately
went in search ot the relics, and
w hile hunting for the one the boy
had found, they discovered two
more that had been unearthed in
the same way. The peculiar
feature of this gastly find is that
they were nearly half a mile apart
No signs of murder or foul play are
visible upon any parts oi the
skeltons, so far as has yet been
ascertained. One of the skulls
and some other parts of the frame
were brought to Milton, and ex
amined by a skilled physician, who
pronounces it that ot a white
female of mature age. The bodies
were evidently only buried a foot
or two beneath the surface. Who
these unfortunates were is
(shrouded in unfathomable mys
tery, and how long they have lain
there the recording angel alone can
tell.

The farmers generally seem to

tent to advise in the matter, we
should admonish the people not to

as a consequence, perfect fruit of
this variety is scarce in the mar
ket. We are staunch believers in
diversified crops, including fruit
of all varieties, but not to the ex
elusion or neglect of the arple,
upon which our state has built an
enviable reputation. Apples at 50
cents a bushel, the selling price at
present, are a profitable crop.
