If there is one project aiiove
any otner that this coast is inter
eat! in seeing driven through to
completion it is the Nicaragua
canal. The putting into actual
operation of that work will bring
more prosperity than any other
international undertaking ever
contemplated. It practically
mean the putting of t tie price of
wheat a few cents a bushel lr'her
each year after the canal is in opera
tion. In referingto this subject the
Chronicle lays, speaking of the
president's message : l'erhaps the
most inttiostirjg part of the mes
sage, and certainly one of the
mod important, is that which
treats of the Nicaragua canal. The
president directly recommends
that the United States guarantee
tlie canal company's bonds pro
vided certain things be carefully
guarded, namely, the completion
of the work v ithin t lie limits of
the guaranty, the subrogation of
the United States to the rights of
the first mortgage bondholders for
any amounts the government may
nave to pay in uie meantime, uuujau. uraml juries are getting m
disfavor anyway, and many think
of the bargain evidently being
hastened by tlie results of expert
ments made in this country.
Nickel is a comparatively scarce
metal, but if the demand for it is
ronsiderablv increased, as it
promises to be, no doubt additional
deposits will soon be discovered
Deposits of the metal have been
found in Oregon, and it would pay
our prospectors to make epecial
search for the mineral. It can be
found in paying quantities.
Ir ii rumored that one of the
possible republican candidate for
the presidency is to be (ieneral
Miles, the Indian lighter and
military hero. An embryo boom
for him seems to be in con tern phi'
tion- . m.
Danvii.ll, Indiana, people are
especially honored by being the
place where Forepaugh's snake
charmer winters, with his cage of
charming snakes. They probably
appreciate the favor as the other
lay a fourteen foot boa escaped
and wandered into a dwelling
house where he found a sleeping
infant and proceeded to swallow it,
having one lei; down when dis
covered. The child was rescued
with difficulty, assistance being
called by the screa lis of the
mother.
The spectacle of a full grand
jury incarcerated in jail, from
lines imposed by the judge of the
court they were serving, was re
cently witnessed in a Texas town.
The jury issued an attachment
for the judge upon some charge,
and the jud;e retaliated by rind
ing each one of the jury guilty of
contempt and lining tlie.n respec
tively $."0, and remanding them to
the control of the -toek of the
company as a security against
mismanagement and Ijfh. This
is a Very different proposition
from the notorious ra:'ioad sub
sidies, where the government sur
rendered its prior lion ami thereby
cut itself oil from force'oMure, and
with the safeguards which the
president indicates there can be
no good reason wpy the Nicaragua
canal should not receive govt ri.
ment aid in this way
It stems that all the talk about
the million dollar congress ex
hausting the revenues of tlie gov.
eminent, is utterly oil". For it is
t-liown that the revenues of tlie
government for the fiscal year
ending June CO, IS'.iI, exceeded
expenditures by $;7,-:i ,";-, al

Extremes are ruinous. In this
country the naval equipment for
defensive or offensive purposes
had dwindled down to almost
extreme liothinu'nes. until a

active measures were taken to
