OREGON WILL BE THERE.
The Btites Representation at tie World'a
Fair Assuming a Farerable Asyict
A joint meeting of the chamber
of commerce and citizens world's
lair commiteea was held in Port
land Monday afternoon. A num
ber of prominent citizens interest
ed in the movement to give Ore
gon a creditable exhibit in the
Columbian Kxposition of '93' took
part in the deliberation, and con
sidering the inclemency of the
weaiuer me meeting was ry
wen aiieuueu. moreover, the
inee'ing was perfectly harmonious
and considerable enthusiasm was
manifested by all present.
The meeting was cilled for the
purpose of taking eoine decisive
action in the matter of raising the
necessary 1 11 ml 3 for exhibiting
Oregon's products at the world's
fair, and it was decided that this
exhibit should and would be made.
It was a!so decided that $100,000
should be raised in this city and
state, of this amount Portland to
8uply $75,000.
It was deemed best to leave the
matter of reising the aioney in
the hands of the joint committee,
and they will go to work at onca
to see that the amount is made up.
It wa9 reported that H. W. Cor
bett had subscribed $1000 already,
and that Donald Macleay had put
his name down for a similar sum.
It was the expressed sentiment of
those present that when the money
should have been raised the sub
scription should have pro rats
vote as to who should have the
management of the nind.
Now tnat the movement has as
sured such a favorable aspect the
committee will at once proceed to
collect the money, and if Portland
is enterprising enough to raise $73,
000 it is thought it will be a very
easy matter to get the remaining
$25,000 from the rest of the state.
'"It is now fully settled that
Oregon will be represented at the
World's Fair," taid a member of
the committee, "and we shall get
the money some way. If Port
land's enterprising citizens show
the proper spirit in this move the
money will e ra Bed easy enough.
There should be no difficulty in
getting the amount as Oregon
would be an unenviable object
lesson if she had no exhibit at the
World's fair at all."
