wagon roads made at heavy tost

the highest peaks. In some of
th. se or hards the trees and vines
occupy studs fcteep hill or moun

hfs toucd-rtake their eulivatron,
and in my o. these steep pl..ces are
now cov- red with luscious :raes,

could only some perservirg ellbrt

Coming up the river yesterday
tho Medoc and El wood had one of
the most exciting races that has
been seen on the river for a long
time, eas the Salem Statesman.
The two' boats left Oregon City at
the same time and ran side and
side, while the captains were
swapping river yarns from the
pilot houses, until they reached
Ash island, when the Modoc ran
into shoal water and the Klwood
passed her with a br om at her
mast head, and arrived here about
Knur anil a Imtf alioad rf ttin

Modoc. Tl.e Klwood made six
landings and brought up thirty
five tons of freight. The Modoc
had seventeen tons aboard and
male nine landings, consuming
about an hour and twenty minutes
in landing. The water at Albany
ye terJay stood two feet and four
tenths, while at Salem it stands
about three feet.
A Hard Winter Predicted.
Sherman county has a weather
prophet, Nelson C. Long, who
predicts that Oregon, especially
that portion east ol the Cascades,
will this year undergo a harder
winter than any year since 1802.
He bases his predictions on the
fact that geese and ducks are far
more numerous than usual, and
that the field squirrel" instead of
retreating to their winter abodes
in the early autumn, were hard at
work until very late laying in a
supply of food. This last,Kancher
Long deems an infallible sign. If
his predictions are true, even,
there will be less loss of stock in
Eastern .-egon than at any time
since the state was settled. Stock
men are well prepared with shelter
and an abundance of food.
Capital tad Capitol,
The Salem Statesman delivers a
short lecture on the ue of the two
words "capital" and "capitol,"
and says: "It is passing strange
we of Salem cannot learn that
'capitol' is a noun and means the
building in wlrch the legislature
meet, while 'capital' is an adjec
tive." Tne Statesman is only half
correct. "Capitol" is a nun and
means, when referring to Oregon,
the state house, or in national
affairs, the building occupied by
congress. "Capital" is usually a
noun also, and means the city
which is capital, either of state or
cation.

The charge is being made that the Royal Baking
Powder contains ammonia. We would have supposed that
the emphatic condemnation of ammonia baking powders
by the most eminent physicians throughout the land, and
the fact of the three leading chemists of Minnesota mak
ing their report to the Senate Committee recently showing
that bread baked with the "Royal" contained ammonia
and the hostility now being manifested by the public
against all ammonia and alum baking powders would have
driven them permanently from the market.
In view of the fact that Baking Powder has become
an indispensable article in every kitchen, it is gratifying
to know that there are brands in the market to which no
suspicion of any kind has ever attached. Dr. Price's
Cream Baking Powder is a pure cream of tartar powder
free from every taint of ammonia, alum or other harmful
substance.
Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder is re
ported by all authorities as free from Ammonia,
Alum, or any other adulterant. In fact, the
( purity of this ideal powder has never been ques
tioned. -
