in grain this coming yeai in
Eastern Oregon. New eettlc-rs are
constantly arriving, and the
amount of ground that is being
broken up indicates the confidence
farmers have in this part of the
state.
The farmers of Eureka Flat,
near Walla Walla, are striving to
raise means to sink an aitesian
well. The Union-Journal says it
is proposed that each farmer to be
benefited shall pay 10 cents an acre
into a fund to be used for tuis pur
pose, and this assessment on the

One Charles Stone, wa? arrested
yesterday on a charge of obtaining
"money under false pretenses in
pasainga bogus check on the Bank
of Oregr n. It was for $27.00 and
was signed by John (iahan, and
Stone said he had been working
in a logging camp 011 the Santiam,
and had come to town too late to
get it cashed. He presented it at
the Exchange Hotel and Mr.
James Murray paid him $3 on the
check, but suspecting that it was
not all right, investigated the mat
ter and found the check to be bo
gus. Stone is in jail to avv tit ex

A dispatch from Astoria says :
Lillian Young, a 10 year-old .niss
who ran away from Albany recent'
ly with a negro named George
W lute, was arrested Tuesday by
Sheriff Smith on advice fioin the
girl's nioUier, who lives at (Vr
vallis. Her dusky paramour was
also taken in by Smith, and both
are in the county jail pending a
hearing, which will be given to
morrow. In her letter to the
sheriff the girl's mother says that
she is not yet of age, and in of a
wild disposition. The pairarrived
in Astoria rearly three weeks ago
and have been quartered in an up
town lodging house since.
Teachers' Examination.
Notice is hereby given that the
regular public examination of
teachers, for Linn county, will
take place in Albany, commencing
on Wednesday, ov. 13th, at 1
o'clock r. m. and continue until
Friday noon, Nov. l.'5'h. All
teachers must positively be present
at the time of commencement, as
no one will be admitted to the ex
amination who is not so present.
