She is her own worst enemy.
She lacks common sense. The
aim of her girlhood is to capture a
husbai d, ad ber every act is to
frighten the men off. she poses as
a useless, delicate creature, whose

her very costume advertises that
it takes a fortune to dress her.
And she is useless, deliberately so.
Every useful thing she regards as
beneath her and systematically
shuns it. And she is delicate for
her manner of life makes her so.
She does pull her corsets too tiht,
and she does have the heels of her

It would be hardly possible for her

The promenade and dancing are

Another Batch of Chaises
Against Minister Egan.
Washington, Oct. 28. Senor
Pedro Alotitt h is evidently receiv
ed his cue from the juuta. The
burd 11 of one of the complaints at
the White house conference last
Friday was that Mr. Montt has
avoided the state department since
the establishment of the provis
ional government, notwithstanding
that the United States was the
first to recognize the new Chilian
givrnment. His neglect as the
oiticial representative of the jun'a
was the subject of much unf'vor
able comment. He has now offici
ally notified Secretary Blaine that
he has received notice of his ap
pointment by the junta as envoy
exiraorumary anu minister pleni
potentiary from Chili to the United
States. Senor Romero, the Mexi
can minister, accompanied by
Senor Montt, arrived at the state
department about noon to thy,
Minister Romero performed his
part by formally introducing the
diplomat, and Senor Montt did the
rest. He informed Secretary
Blaine that the reason he had not
pieBented himself sooner was his
absence from the city almost con
tinuously since the overthrow of
Balmaceda. He also informed the
eecretary that he had now received
not.lication of his appointment.
Tne official documents wh:ch are
ne essar to establish him in l.is

received the Chilian witti all due

CHAROKH AGAINST MIKISTKR KUAN.
Nbw York, Oct. 28. A Wash
ington special says Senor Montt,
the Chdian envoy here, called
on Secretary Blaine and had a long
talk concerning the assault on tho
American sailors in alpara so.
Senor Montt explained the de
tails of the affair which had come
te him in his official capacity, and J
charged that Minister Egan is
really responsible for all of the
trouble existing between Chili and
the United States. He said that
duriug the r volution in Chili,
when the con.reaeionalists en
deavored 10 make a secret advance
on Valparaiso and surprise Balma-
ctda's troops, the United Stales
vessel Baltimore played the part
of a spy. He charges the Bal'i
more discovered tnat me congres
sional army was making a forward
movement, and thst vessel, wnicli
should have maintained a neutral
attitude, steamed along the coast
and along the landing places whre
the insurgents were located and
then hastened to Valparaiso and
reported to Egan, who immediate
ly laid the facts before Baltnaneda.
The victorious party claims their
plans were divulged to the enemy
tiuough Egan'e interference, anil
that at that battle which ensue 1
they suffered a loss of at least 100 J
soldiers as a direct result of Egau's
espionage.

A BRUTAL FIGHT,
The Spectators and Fighters All
Take Hand In It.
New York, Oc 28. At out 200
ejorts fro iu this city and Brooklyn
journeyed to a road house last
night near Danbury. Conn., where
they w itnesm d a kid glove light to
a tinttli between Jack Bates, of
Ohio, and Joe Daley, of New York.
It was after 1 o'clock this morning
then the men entered the ring.
Con M'.'Aul tf-t brother of the
famcui light weight chauij ion, was
selected as r feree. The fight was
a sort ol a go as-you please atlair
ana at one tune it looked as
though the wlrjle 20) were going
to take a hand in it. It started olf
in good shape and for the first four
rounds they fought fairly. Daley
then receive J some severe punish
ment, which induced him to om
inence his foul fighting. The foul
ing commenced about the lattir
part of the fourth round, and be
fore the close of the fifth round
overybody wasinthering.pu hing,
shoving and jostling one another,
and btl owing "foul" at the top of
their voices. The wildest k ml of
excitement prevailed, whit all
bands were endeavoring to separ
ate the fighters, who had their
teeth lastened in each other like
two bulldogs. Fully five minute
was tost in trying to restore
peace. In the sixth round, during
one one ot ihi cunctic, Daley
managed to get his thumb in Bates
nou'li and increased the size of it
by running it up in the left cheek.
Bates bled freely, and first blood
was claimed for and allowed Daley.
The men had to be seperated fre
quently in ttsis round, as they both
lou.ed all Ihev knew how every
time they came together. At the
cull of time Da'.ey evidently didn't
th nk things evened up, as his fo
lowed Bates to his corner and bit
a p'ecc out of his shouldir. It was
co d blot tied, but it was allowed,
deep t j all pretests. The large
crowd went there to see
a light to a finish, and so long as
both men were fouling, the specta
tors wanted to see it out, no mat
re r if the fighters killed ech
other. The seventh round was a
rough-and tumble affair of the
most approved style, consisting of
choking, biting, kicking, gouging,
and all kinds of unfair lighting.
Daley who started all the foul
fighting, got decidedly the worst of
it at his own peculiar style of
pugilism. He finally run out ol
the ring to escape Lis puishnient,
but he was thrown back into the
ring again bp his own friends, and
told' to take his medicine. He
made several more attempts to
turn and make bis scape, but
each time he was headed off by
the crowd an pushed bat k into the
ring. The eight and la it round
was of shoit duration, as all the
tight had been punished out of
Daley, and his only aim seemed
to be 10 get out of the ring and as
far awav from the fists of Bales as
possible. Finally, in his mad
effort to escape, lie smashed Con
McAulitfe iu the face an i dove out
through the r. pes like an arrow,
and tliers was nothing else left for
McAulitf to do I ut give the vic oiy
to Bates, which he did, and then
all hands started for their homes.
