circles throughout Hungary are

of extensive frauds committed by a

The jockey, it appears, has been

sums of money. The disgraced
rider had a number of confederates

While at The Dalles Colonel Lovell

built at the Cascades. He says
the locks are going up al the rale
of a foot an 1 a half per day. The

winter the Sunday T:mes of this
cily offered a prize cf $20 to the
young women who should write the
te-it latter or essay on" 1 he Model
Husband." Miss Lillian B. Perrv
of Covengton, thirty miles north of
this city, won the prize. The letter
w as copied in the Minneapolis
i noune, wnere rremoni neiu, a
banker aud rich business man of
that city, saw it. He much ad
mired the beautiful sentiments.
Going to New York, Reid came
across the letter. reprinted
in one of the metropolitan
journals. Rtacbii.g Chicago on
his return, he read the prize letter
in a Chicago paper. By this time
he felt sure that his fate was inter
woven with that of the fair un
known essayist. Mr. Reid wrote
to her, asking to be allowed to
correspond. She answered no
letters of this kind, having received
many. Mr. Reid was persistent!
and wrote a second letter and in
closed indorsements, and Miss
Perry con-ented to coriespond with
her unknown admirer. Later Mr.
Reid visited her. A second viett
ended in a promise to be his wife.
To day he arrived in this city and
this ii'fternoon they were married
nt the bride's home. Mr. Reid is
35 years old and handsome. The
bride is a typical Southern beauty,
the daughter of a 'once wealthy
fjinily, impoverished uy the ai,
and, ttioug'i reared in a country
town, is a young woman of rare
accomplishments.

A. Williamson, the Salvation
Army murderer of the lloores,
father. and son, and who ie to be
hanged on October 31, has written
the following note to Governor
Francis: "Dear Governor: I want
to ask you for a favor. Will you
let mo hang in public? Your
friend, Thomas A. Williamson."

Masterman, an aged wealthy
farmer, residing in Fairmount
township, sixteen miles from here,
committed suicide yesterday morn
ing because his young wife eloped

Demmler, Penn., sent President
Harrier n a box of Unmanufactured
at the Demmler works. This
morning Cronemeyer received the
following letter from President
Harrison, dated Washington,

have your lette-i of October 15,
and also a box of bright tin plate,
which you send as a specimen of
the product being turned out by
the United States Iron and Tin
Plate Company. I h,ve no ckill
in determining the character of
this work, but to the eye it teems
to be eminently satisfactory, and I
thank you for this evidence of a
new industry that has been estab
lished in the United Stat.'s. I
cannot quit understand bow any
American can dcubt we nave
mechanical skill and business
sagacity to establish successfully
her manufacture ol tin plate. Ao
other cou ltry c-rtainly surpasses
us in inventive genius of its citi
zens or i n the busi ness sagacity of it s
capitalists. It is surprising to m
that any paw lotlc American should
approach ibis question with a
desire tt sea this great and .inter
esting experiment fail, or with an

dences of its success. It will be a
great step in the direction of com
mercial independence when we
produce our own tin plate. It
iems to me nothing unless it be
lack of faith in the maintenan-e of

achievement. I can understand.
however, that success should be
doubted and our failure accepted
with satisfaction in Wales, but I
cannot understand bow any Atnei-

question or why be should always
approach every evideiicj of tin
success of the establishment of
this industry in this country with
a disposition to discredit ami re
