The Sunday iuestion continues
to woiry a great many people, and
efforts are still in progress to clog
the wheels of necessary legitimate
labor, and wholesome recreation,
inetead of strivio); to effectually
Kkon tbe work that is vicious anil
demoralizing. The Chronic! eays
that the attempt of the rittsDur
law and Order Society to prevent
the issue of the Sunday newspapers
in that city will be a flat failure,
aa aimilar cmsades have failed in
other cities. According to the
reports, these reformers, if they
i arrv out their plans to arrest any
one beainninir work on Sunday
night before 12 o'clock, will put a
quietus on the Monday newspaper
aa 11. Next thev should pro
ceed against the milkmen, and
Street-car drivers and conductors
and all who are forced to work on
Sunday. It is safe to say that
nine men out of ten would pre er
to dispense with milk in their
morning coffee on Sunday rather
than be cut off from their favorite
newspa per.
A prominent clergyman of IVn
ver, pastor of a Christian church
in that city, is charged by a
wealthy Spanish lady with enter
ing into a conspiracy to deceive
"her. Her daughter was asked in
marriage by a man who had been
divorced. She objected, being a
Catholic, because no priest could
perform the ceremony, but con
sented if one could be found. The
reverend gentleman of Denver, on
solicitation of the would be groom,
personated a priest and performed
the ceremony. Hence the irate
mother's charge. The main ob
ject has been accomplished, the
daughter and her lovr are married
fast enough.
Tim women of this country are
noted for their hnmane feelings,
and prompt and. energetic action,
when a course to be pursued lias
been decidad npon. They con
sidered that Mrs. Maybrick the
Englishwoman sent to prison for
life under the charge of having
murdered her husband was wrong
fully incarcerated and strnitway
set about raising a fund to obtain
her relief. The fund has already
grwn to a large Bize and if money
and influence can succeed in open
in? the door of the English prison,
Mrs. May bruit Will.be released.
The river, 'short- and sea fish
cries of the I'acitic Coast represent
a great industry. The number of
men eniployek in 1873 made a
total of 14,603. In IS88 the capi
tal employee was .1,4!)4,23:. The
salmon fisheries are the most im
portant, and of these Alaska has
the largest share, a fact owing
partly to the large capacities of
the canneries, but chiefly to the
greater productiveness of the
Alaska rivers. This seems to in
dicate that Alaska to be the great
salmon region of the future.
A bi'M.ktis from the census
office gives preliminary figures on
ths first investigation ever made
by the government into the
nursery industry. l'Vom the tabu
lations in the bulletin it appears
that there are in the I'nited
States 4,510 nurseries, valued at
$41,878,835.80 and occupying 172.
80t acres of land, with an invested
capital of t52,42T,KJ0.51, and giv
ing emoloyment to 45,(157 men,
2,27 women, and 14.2CO animals,
using in the proposition and culti
vation of trees and plants ' W,
000.04 worth of implements.
The evident intent to convict
Bomeof themobof the lynchers who
recently disgraced Omaha by tak
ing the law into their own hands,
will be a matter for congratulation
If it is carried out. The lynching
business should be effectually sat
down upon.
Utah has made grett advances
in population during the past Un
years, increasing from 14S.!V3 in j
1330 to 207,'. jO in ISiiO. It is a puy
that the Mormon church should
stand in the way of the furth.r
development of the territory, as it
undoubtedly does by inspiiing
disl rust. If this distrust could be
completely removed so as to per
mit statehood to be conferred
Utah would move along on a
career of prosperity.
It seems that the accusation
that Pennsylvania is the state of
the iron barons, is not correct, in
fact, for other states equal and
excel that state in the production
of that useful metal. The total
production in the United States
being 14,227,892 long tons, Penn
sylvania's share of which is 1,650,-
507 tons. Michigan leads in pro
duction, having aa output of
5,750,370 tons, while Alabama
presses Pennsylvania for second
place with a production of 1,5'.C,-
US2 tons.
The title business seems to
have degenerated into a bargain
and sale atrangrment in Europe.
France had a scandal over the
matter and now Germany is in
the game pickle. Let them se'l
them, they won't last much longer
anyhow.
A sleeping car is not a very good
place for a somnambulist. Recent
ly a young lady on a New York
Central train adicted to that
malady, walked out on the plat
form and off in the darknes, re
sulting in injuries that caused
death.
Ir is announced that a sugar
refinery of 1200 barrels per day
capacity, is to be started in X. Y.,
to be independent oi me irusi.
That is certainly a sweet announce
ment. . Height of Cruelty.
Nervous women neldoiu receive
the sympathy they deserve. While
often the pictures of health, they
are constantly ailing. To with-
I h"ld sympathy from these nnfor
! tunates is the height of cruelly.
They have a weak heart, causing
shortness of breath, Muttering,
pain in side, weak and hungry
spells, and finally swelling of
ankles, oppression, choking,
smothering and dropsy. li.
