DEATH IN A WELL.
Particalirs of tb Accident Caosicg the
D.ath of J. B. Montgomery.
La Grande Gazette : One of the
most terrible accidents ever known
in thiB community oceured Wed
nesday evening resultn.g in ttie
death of 'Jennings U. Montgomery,
by the caving in of a well. At
about 0 o'clock in the evening he
descended into a well, climbing
down the nails w hich were con-1
structed of round bow lders. When
about fourteen feet below the sur
face one of the rocks in the .vall
gave way percipitating upon him
a mass of rock an 1 eariti .bout
lour feet in depth. Aid was sum
moned with all possible speed, and
willing hands rendered all possible
aid. The narrow piar eis on'y
permitted one person to work at a
time, and w hen a large i iut of the
rocks had been removed another
crash of the wal's buried him still
leeper. For two hours and a half
he could be heard and uiideifct-od.
He told them he could breath with
great oitliculty and implored them
to remove the weight that was
crushing him to death. At hah
past eight a smothering cry told
the awful story of his fate. It was
nearly two hours later before the
mass was cleared away. The bo ly
was in an upright position an lone
uriu was thrown over the head. 1'
is probable that life was extinct
fully an hour before he was reaeu
ed. j'ennings 15. Montgomery, fa
miliarly known as "J inks" Mont
gomery, was about 4i years of
.ige. He leaves a wife and family
ol children, also a brother, Sprat
Montgomery, who is a resident of
La Grande. The two brothers
came to Li Grande about six years
ao. They were formerly residents
jf Albany, Oregon.
