A Chance In Mt. Jefferson.
It is said i j Salem that people
living in sight of Mt Jefferson
are deceived by an optical illusion,
or the snow has slipped from one
side of the peak of the mountain,
leavirg the surface as level as that
of Table rock. Persons have been
looking at the mountain' with
glasses, and tacit time a flat top
where the snow capped peak
formerly was greeted their gaze.
It is possible that it is an atmos
pheric phenomenon similar to the
mirage. In any case, the shape of
the mountain seems materially
changed.

The I'oiular Favorite.
On to-morrow night at the Al
bany opera house the universal
favorites Jas. U. firismer, Phoebe
Davie's and their own coinp.iny
will appear in Mr. De Witt
Young'd romantic play entitled
"Beacon Lights'' its first presenta
tion in Albany, speaking of it the
Sacramento Record Union says:
"Beacon Lights" drew a large and
delighted audience at the opera
house last night. '1 lie play is a
comedy-melodrama. The story is
laid in Mexican territory, and the
different scenes display a series of
strong and well-marked out fcitua
lions. The best of them is w hen
the climax is reached where
Captain Allan, the hero of the
plav, in th? third act, in dirguise
visit the rendezvous of the vidian
of' the story to rescue the woman
and v her clii'd cruelly kidnapped
by a band of ruliians so realistic
was the scene that the audience
give a sigh of relief when the ex
citing incident was over, and
marked the adroitness of the
author and the brilliant ending of
the a Hair by long continued ap
plause. The play was very much
brightened by the clever and
witt? chatter of Carrie Calhoun
the stolid profundity of Col. Clay
Calhoun, and the drollery ol
Soapy Smilts. The play is an ex
cellent one, the scenery good, and
those who desire to see a well-writ
ten comedy-drama, dealing with
western l'le, should not fail to see
this clevar entcrtainme&t. The
sale of seats are progressing very
fast, so would advise all that wist
to get a good seat to go and receive
them at once at Will A Link's
m isic store.
Oregon Aeinent.
J. W. Shelton, chairman of the
State loard of Equalization, has
written a letter to the various
Djards ot county commissioners,
asking tliem to postpone the levy
of county taxes until after the
state board Las finished its work of
equalization, which will not lie
until some time in December. He
also desires information as to the
basis upon which the various
assessors assess proj eny of various
Kinds and tiie percentum they
deduct from actual values. That
is, he wishes to know to w hat ex
tent the assessors violate the law
and their own oaths, which lequire
them to assess all property at its
full value. There seems to be
under the law which allows a
county assessor to appdint as
many deputies as he needs, no
need for this delay in returning
the assessment roils. In most ot
the counties, assessors are granted
extensions of from one to three
months, and the assessment rolls
come straggling along weeks and
months alter the time provided by
law for their return. The p?r
diem system of pay is probably
largely resn-tible for this. As
sessors are naturally like govern
lueni engineers, when tiiey
good job they want it to
have an
last s
long as possible. The State Board
of Equalization has a very import
ant work before it, one tliat it it is
well done will arouse much criti
cism and censure; hut they were
not put in ollice to please the tax
dodgers, the mossba-ks and law
violaters. Oregon's assessment is
a scandal at home and a shame
and a reproach abroad Telegram.
