The Chronicle gives a pretty
pertinent vie of matters in reply
ing to a criticism of ti e Vancouver,
British Columbia, Telegram. That
pajer had claimed that the Cana
dians have a right to scrutinize
our expenditures anJ condemn
extravagance in tlia payment of
pensions, because there is a large
annexation party which miy ulti
mately succeed in carrying the
Dominion over to the United
States. "In that event' remarks
the Telegram, "Canada would have
to pay its ihare of the pension
list," and adds, "if this were de
termined on the bass of popula
tion Canada's share would be
something like $! 0,000,000 pjr
annum." The Chronicle replies
by saying that the Telegram ought
to dismiss any fears it has on this

Mr. Ober, a world's fair repre
sentative, recovered it, and with
the permission cf the governor of
San Domingo, brought it to the

use it in some way in ornamenting
the exposition grounds.
Harvest is over. The largest
and most successful crops of all
kinds, save hops, ever experienced
in the state have been gathered.
Yields have been large and all
products of good quality. The
people are to be congratulated on
the success of the seasons labors.
Prosperity and good times exist in
every portion of the state. Stock
wintered well, increase of sheep
was large and wool clip enormous,
climatic conditions favored the
growth, development, yield and
harvest of hay, cereals and fruit.
The water has been quite plentiful
for the miner. Everybody ap
pears to have been favored, and
happiness reigns. Prosperous
times are assured in Oregon.

of the militia of the different states
of the Union will be held in Chi
cago Oct. 20 to- discuss and take
action upen the question of a
proper military display during the
dedicatory ceremonies of tho
world's fair on the week of Oct. 12,
18'J2. The delegates, one from
each state, have been appointed
by their respective governors up
on invitation of tha exposition
committer on ceremonies. A full
