TUB BUSINESS SITUATION.
Last week tbe general business
of the country t least in tbe
eastern portion, was much better
than before, tbe hot wather hav
ing forced ths corn crop forward
bo that it is nearly all out of dan
ger from frosts, and promises to
be the largest crop that has ever
' been grown. In ppite of advice to
hold many farmers sold their crop
of wheat while the price remained
at good tigures and received the
pay thus putting money into circu
lation. Then to a shipment ot four
million in gold from Europe ma le
a large increase in our business
prospects and advantages.
The New York Tribune says that
western receipts of wheat list
week were 7,902,112 bushels,
against 2,tilo,37G for the same
week last year, aud for three
weeks of September the western
receipts have been 22,598,702 bu
shels against 7,(jo2,9t8 for tbe same
weeks last year. But the foieign
demand was so revived by the de
cline in price, to about $1 a little
more than a week ago, that the ex
ports have risen again, amounting
tlour included, to 17,132,441 bush
els from both coasts for three
weeks of September, against 4,041,
900 bushels for the same weeks last
year, and the price has advanced
to $1 05 1-4 for October delivery.
Especially low prices are not to
be expected while tllte pressure of
fofeign demands continues so great.
Corn naturally fell 4 cents with
more assured prospects, ami oats 2
cents. Better prospects fc." the
crop and the comparative elendcr
ness of tbe foreign demand ateo
depressed cotton half a cent, the
receipts for September thus far
having beeu only 270,000 bales,
against 375,000 last year, and th?
exports not quite 9 1,0 JO, against
154,000 ba'es.
The volume of domestic trade is
already beginning to exceed that
of lastyeai, so that bank clearings
at all cities outside of New York
show a gain of 3 pe. cent for the
last week. Yet the excess in e'ear
ings of September, 1S1H), over those
of the same moiith of 18S9 was
nearly 1300,000,000, or IS tier cent
In the course of foreign commerce,
. changes still more noteworthy are
seen. The imports still fall some
what below last year's in value,
the decrease for three weeks at
New York being $5,100,000, or 16.5
percent. This is in part because
the September imports last year
were exceptionally large, but the
li ures iudicate an aggregate of less
than liO,000,CJO for the month.
On the other hand, the increase in
exports from New York "lone for
three weeks has been 5,903,)ii:G or
just one-third, and while the de
crease in cotton is heavy, as above
shown, the aggregate of exports
fjr the month ii'ikely toiise above
175.000,000. It is evident that the
moderate excess of experts over
imports for the month, though
satisfactory in comparason with a
balance of $7,000,0.10 the other way
in September last, would hardly1
account for the rapid movement
of gold in this direction bad there
not been large investments of for
eign capital in American securities.
The great industries are improv
ing slowlv ana naturally, with no
symptoms as yet of unhealthy ex
citement or expansion. The iron
market is rather stronger in tone,
larger orders being recorded for
man manufactured products, and
the activity in securities makes the
rail trade more hopeful, though no
change in prices or sales is yet
seen. mmtgmm
The subject of the duelling is
fast reaching a place, in public
opinion, that will most effectually
put a stop to combats of that
nature. A true conception of the
matter gives no grounds whatever ;
neither on tbe part of personal
bravery, peisonal duty nor common
tense can on iota of reason be'
found for it, and in the direct ratio
as people become civilized and
enlightened does it piss out of
favor. Recently the head of the
Catholic church the Pope, has
written a letter condemning the
practice in the strongest terms, for
which the world owes him a due ap
preciation and acknowledgement.
In closing his letter he says: "A
man of character should despise
the deceptive judgments of the
crowd. It is a holy and just feel
ing which prevents a man from
committing murder; and he who
bears insult and calamity rather
neglect duty certainly shows a
more exalted mind than he who,
upon the slightest offense, snatches
up arms. In our opinion he shows
true bravery, that kind of bravery
which it is right to call virtue."
Tub campaign in Ohio is one
calculated to bailie, the keenest
politicians. At one time it ap
peared as if the chief issue was
silver. Then the democratic candi
date was extremely eager to dis
cuss the tariff1; now that the re
publicans have apparently let up
on silver and are presenting the
tariff issue fairly and squarely the
democrats are howling about sil
ver and iefus) to admit that the
tariff is "in it." If the republi
cans keep np their present lines of
attack until the campaign closes
they will be sure to win, for they
have managed to again concen
trate attention on the tariff issue
and are making it very warm for
their opponents, who are utterly
unable to repeat tbe stale lies
about McKinley prices without
exciting derision.
England and German have
each applied for about five acies
of 6 pace in the world's fair build-
in? fo.- their exhibits. The director-general
and his staff were com
pletely staggered by the request,
as they had had no idea that either
of these nations would ask for so
much room. This request is very
significant. It means that Eng
land and Germany will send their
richest products to Chicago in
1S93, and it also means an expan
sion of the space to be alloted to
oilier European nations which
will not allow to be outdone,
France in particular. It practi
cally assures the success of the
world's fair.
Already predictions are being
made that tie dread ul famiie
which is now inflicting Russia will
bs rei eated in 1S9?,is there t e. m? to
be an indisposition to retain wheat
or corn for eeed, the present press
ing necessity being so great as to
entirely diive out the idea of pro
viJing for the future. Should this
horrible conjecture prove correct
there u no telling what the result
might oe. i ne conditions are
awful now, but two years of
famine in succession would con
vert the people into fiends.
