POLITICS AND ItlSIXU,
There is food for reflection for
those interested in the Albany
mines in an incident which re
cently occured in our neighboring
state of Washington.
A young man at Cu-ur d'Al ne,
Idaho, sent his father a copy of
the "Miner" of the place. In the
paper was an account ol an excur
sion of Montaniana to that place
One item is as follows :
Everybody was proud to tell'our
Montana visitors about the big
dividends from the Coenr d'Alene
mines, bat it remained for A. M.
Edler, manager of the Helena &
Frisco mine, to tel' them what
made these dividend1). A canvas
nailed to his big mill np Canyon
Creek bore these words in big
letters when the excursionists ar
rived: ( Silver. 02c.
Under Cleveland
( Lead, $3.50.
. ( Silver, $1.19.
Under Harrison
( Lead, $5.10,
Those who are familiar with
Cleveland's anti-silver sentiments,
will appreciate the hit scored. This
country wants no exclusive gold
standard. The people (believe in
the silver dollar as well as gold,
and both should be maintained
at a parity.
Disguised as a drunken United
States sailor he reels into a wait
ing boat and is swiftly conveyed on
board the man of war San Fran
ciaco, with the connivance of
Admiral Brown. Were it not for
the memory of the many cruel
acts he was guilty of, the method
and facts of bis escape would be
universally approved here.
The development of the tin
plate manufacture in this country
has developed the fact that cotton
seed oil can take the place of
tallow, which entered largely in
the procees as practiced in Eng
land. As this will give an en
Urged market for one of the prin
ciple products of the southern
states, probably the ultra free
traders will begin to acknowledge
that their is a chance yet for good
to evolve from the McKinley bill
.hscouKAUE manufacturing en
terprises. A big plow factory
wants to come to Albany. Well
Albany wants it to come ; the wish
is mutual. This city has never
been backward about aiding such
enterprises, and the Eame public
spirit exists here now.
Tukbe is talk of establishing a
fruit cannery end evaporater in
Albany. It is an enterprise that
is greatly needed here. No city
in Oregon offers a better field for
profi tab lore turns in this Easiness
than tides this city.
S J

satisfied with that.
Among all the advanced move
ments in educational circles with
in a few years that are in favor of in
corporating the kindergarten into
the public school system is at once
the most interesting and promise)
the most beneficient results to the
country at large. Within twenty
yean the system elaborated by
Fru'bel has grown rapidly in favor
in all countries where the educa
tion of children is given thought
and attention. From very in
significant beginnings in America,
the kindergarten has steadily ad
vanced in favor nntil now it u
recognized by leading educators as
the system best adapted to the
earlier instruction of the child.
It has not now become a part ol
many public school systems, but
it is soon to be adopted in all our
principal cities if the signs of
the times are read correctly. San
Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia,
Rochester and St. Louis have free
kindergartens supported from
public funds. St. Paul, Washing
ton, ixs Angeles ana other cities
have: free kindergartens kept up
by private subscriptions. In every
large city ol tne union private
kindergartens abound, and all over
the country the discussion pro
ceeds as to whether Fmbel's idea
shall be engrafted upon the Amer
ican system or continued as pri
vate instruction. Congress will
be asked to adopt the system in
the District of Columbia, and
kindergarten associations in every
state are crpng its importance and
merits. The proposition for the
establishment of a permanent
kindergarten school in Albany is a
good one, and should meet with
encouragement.
All the element of commercial
activity point certainly to a prot
perous business year in Oregon.
Ori gon's state fair is proving
great success, notwithstanding the
lowering clouds.
Business men report a steadily
; increasing volume of trade in this
city.
Ladies, you can save money by
purchasing your hosiery at the
Ladies Bazaar. Call and examine
our new line.
The Thomas Kay Woollen Millc
of Salem, have appointed O. W.
Simpson their agent in Albany. A
full line of men and boys clothing
blankets and flannels and all arti.
cles manufactured by the mill will
be kept in stock. These goods are
the best in the market and win
give entire satisfaction.
Hanan & Son's fine shoes asii on
their own merit, and alwavs eives
satisfaction. Try a pair at T. L.
Wallace & Co.'s.
Mr. J. S. Morgan has iut
completed burning a freeh kiln
at his brick yard one mile west of
the court house, and is prepared
to fill all orders. A man will ho
in waiting at the vard to attend tn
all callers for brick.
