Corvallih, Sept. 15. Judge
Pies who failed to appear in the
court room yesterday, condescend
ed to hear the case of the applica
tion of the Oregon Pacitic employes
for payment to-dav. He held that
the company bad all day Monday,
in which to make the payment
ordered by the court.
At It o'clock to-day tire case came
up and court was adjourned until
2 p. m. At that time the court is
sued an order, first that all the
earnings of the road from this date
be applied to the payment of the
employes ; and second that Col. T.
E, Hogg appear here on or before
October 20 and show cause why he
should not be removed, on the
grouud that he had not obeyed the
previous order of the court in pay
ingthe employes.
If this order is carried out it will
insure the men their money as fast
as it is earned by the road.
Kndarance Under Safferiug.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer
relates the following story of en
durance and intense Buffering:
Edward Frye, a loger, employed
at La Baxter's camp near Sno
qualciie, came to Providence hospi
tal yesterday afternoon suffering
from a severe cut three inches
above bis left knee. Two weeks
ago Frye and several other work
men were barking a log. One ot
the men was working a short dis
tance ahead of Frye, and as he
brought the ax down upon the
log, his hands slipped and the
sharp instrument flew back, strik
ing Frye in the left leg, just above
the knee. The blade sunk to the
bone, cutting a chord and causing
great loss ot blood. The injured
man was taken to camp, where
the wound healed rapidly. He
went to work about five days ago
and the cut was reopened. Cold
set in and the limb commenced
to swell. For four days the pain
was intense. Sleep was impos
sible, and at last he started for
Seattle and arrived in the city
yesterday afternoon. Thirteen
miles were made on horseback
and he suffered intense pain at
every step of the horse.

A citizen of Koseburg, who bad
just returned from Marshfield,
Coos county, reported to the Rose

on the wharf while he was there

pleted ready to be put on the track
and the irons are there for four
times as many more. He inspected
considerable of tbe road bid very
critically, and says it is complete
in every particular. The grade
is excellent and the bridges are
strong, well built, and all the
larger oues nicely painted. He
thinks there are three r four hun
dred white men and Chinamen at
work along the line, and there iu
nothing anywhere to indicate that
tliey do not intend to buiid a rail
road out to Koseburg just as fast
s they can. Myrtle Point, he
says, is oue of the liveliest tOA'BS
iu Coos county, and seems to be
building up rapidly.

to send to the penitentiary, the
authorities are puzzled to know
what to do with them.
Train Movement.

train bound north will lay over at
Salem until 5 o'clock in the eve

depot. Tbe train will leave the

Hypnotism and Divorce.
A divorce has recently been
granted in Washington on tin:
ground that the contraction of
marriage was due to hypnotic
influence. If hypnotism is a per
suading potency, a subjection of
the will to the behests of another,
by a subtle force mainly cominn
through the channel of the eye, it
may be charged with the instiga
tion of a good deal of ill-advised
wedlock. In one of tho latest
monthlies an English officer w ho
had been much in India gives an
account of the performances of one
of the Indian experts in magic for
the amusement of the officer.
Among these were the familiar
but inexplicable feats of the mass
acre ot tne ctuid in the Dasket,
climbing out of sight on a string
thrown in the air, and others
quite as imposs ble. The ollicers
states that the fakir had a marvel
ously piercing and fascinating eye,
and he entered upon no perform
ance until he had impressed every
person present with a ga.e. When
pressed for an explanation after
ward, he said that he had done
nothing. He had not niaa-mcre'
and had no basket, child, sacred
twine or anything else. He had
simply induced them to imagine
thai they had witnessed miracu
lous feats. The young man or
woman who possesses this faculty
to an extend like that credited to
the fakir, would be an exceedingly
dangerous person to have about,
unrestrained by a high moral de
velopment. It may be supposed
that it exercised un .onsciously by
the party at times. Still, it is well
to believe that the power of re
sisterice is possessed sutlicimtly
not to release the person yielding
to it from all responsibility. If we
let down tbe bars low nough to
let the hypnotic bull into the
domestic pasture, all the weaker
vessels will stop grazing and say:
"It's of no use. We're in for it,
anyway."

found on the Siuslaw coast, says :
Last week we spoke of the mysteri
ously upturned boat found at the
mouth of the :iver. The parties
who left Florence in the boat have
not showed up as yet, ami from
information gleaned since our
last issue we can almost definitely
state that they were defaulters
and not health seekers as they
palmed themselves oil' to !.
Some few weeks ago at Tacomathe
Fidelity Trust company of that
city was robbed of a considerable
sum of money by uiu Albertson,

From marks and partly erased
names found on linen wealing ap
parel left at thf Florence hotel, it
is quite conclusive that one of the
two who so mysteriously disap
peared is Albcrtson, and that they
are now seeking means of escape
along the coast.

a blonde look colorless. A pur
blonde with clear eyes can at way-s
wear baby blue in the evening,
but if she wishes the whiteness ol

eyes and the yellow of her hair to
be brought out mostetleclively she
will choose rose color. All the
dark shades of blue are suited to
her, and blie will be wisest if she
chooses them in preference to all
other shades of the coloi.
