The lack of interest in bord of
trade meetings seems to be a
prevalent condition, during the
first years of their existence, so
- that no one need be discouraged
because such conditions exist.
Take for instant the Chicago board
of trade, now one of the most
active and influential oiganizatious
in the United States, and its ups
and downs forms an interesting
historical object lesson for the
guidance of smaller organizations.
The first attempt at forming a
board of trade in Chicago was in
December, 1841, by a merchant
who'i tried to prevail upon bit
fellow-merchants to rent a hall
where all could meet, and buy,
sell or barter. The attempt fell
flat, and it was not until 1848
that an organization for commercial
exchange was finally affected by
Messrs. Thomas Richmond and V.
L. Whiting. The former was in i
the elevating business; the latter
was the first grain broker of Chi
cago. A room was rented for $ 110
per annum, and the board started
out with a membership o' SO. The
first meeting was held in April,
1848, on which occasion inspectors
of fish and flour were appointed
For three year, however, the mer
chants failed to make their appear
ance unless some political affair
was to be discursed, and, as an in
ducement to promote attendance,
it was announced that a free lunch
would be furnished to all of the
members attending the sessions.
This; was effectual for only a short
time but in 1857 rapid strides
were made. In that year 7,500,000
bushels of wheat were exported
to England. In 1S5D the board
was regulary incorporated, and
bad built for itself a house at the !
corner of La Salle and Washington
streets, which was destroyed in
the fire of 1871. A new chamber
of commerce was build on the old
site, which was formally opened
October , 1872. In 1S81 the
membership had become so lare
that subscriptions were taken for
its present building which was
dedicated April 29, 18S5.
experiment. A Forum article
says that the most experienced
railroad men feel that the possi
bilities of steam practice are near
ly reached much greater speed
is not practicable. A maximum
of ninety miles per hour, with
running speed of sixty to seventy
is all that can be hoped for under
the best condition which can be
provided. The liirilations are
numerous and they are well known
to aU eng'neer. The maximum
speed of which a locomotive is
capable 1 as not been materially
increased in a number of years
The scheduled time has been
shortened principally by cutting
down grades, straightening cui ves
tilling up raynes anil replacing
wooden structures by permanent
ones oi iron or stone; by the
use of heavy trains, safer
switches, improved method of
signalling, the intei locking switch
and signal system, the abolition of
grade crossing; in short, by im
provements in detail and manage
ment which permit a higher
speed on a more extended section
of road because of fe.eater safety
and the greater degree of confi
dence inspired in the engine
driver. .
IIo.nok a aiong tlreves seems to
have been set at defiance in New
York, where William S. Ilollings
worth took si sty thousand dollars
from the safe in his keepin
which belonged to John Ia!y, the
faro gambler. Hollingsworth,
while a respectable daylight ciii
zen, was a gambling partner of
Daly in the night faro games, and
after taking tho monev dared
Daly to commence suit for its re
coyery, which lor very obvious
reasons Daly concluded not to do
his business methods would not
stand the test of legal investiga
tion, and an appeal to the law
would end in his discomfiture.

The perfectly nonsensical prac
tice of resorting to force or bravado
to establish ones honor or leputa
tion, or of resorting to the placing
01 uvea in jeoparuy to right a
wrong, either fancied or real, is
. fast passing out of date and more
rational methods coming into
vogue. The Chronicle takes that
view of the case in remarking that
a duel, not of the French kind,
was fought in the aouthe n part of
Delaware recently and resulted in
placing both of the combatants
a critical condition. The affair
grew out of a disparaging remark
made by one of the duelists about
the other's sister. No doubt the
brother of the girl was justly in
dignant, but if ne recovers from
his wounds he will probably
real'ze that a recourse to the code
did not afford a remedy for the
trouble for he has only proved his
own confidence in his sister's
honor without convincing the
world of the fact. Nineteenth
centnry intelligence has grasped
the idea that violent actions can
not take the place of proof, but
there is an occasional instance
which seems to indicate the exist
ence of the belief in some quarters
that it is only necessary to kill
some one to prove that you are
right, or to be killed in the at
tempt. The aim of the present time is
to push through to as near perfec
tion as possible in every depart
ment of human endeavor. N01 ice
able in this l;ne is the improve
ments in mechanical appliances,
and the perfection attained in the
ne of steam power is one of the
most wonderful of all. L'ut the
