Messrs. Wilcox, Hollenbeck and
Wandell have invented a machine
for measuring cloth, which prom
ises to be a big thing for theia.
Very simple in its operation.it will
measure cloth of all width with
accuracy and great rabidity, an in
dicator showing constantly the
amount reeled otT, together with
the total price, at any amount per
yard desired or an inch in length.
It alto has an attachment for
measuring goods for an invoice,
one that will save a great deal of
time. Its capacity for general use
is seventy yards, which of course
is moie than is ordinarily needed.
The machine is a remarkably in
geaius one, displaying considera
ble study and investigation in its
construction. The owners will go

The member of the U. S. recruit
ing party who was accused of de
tauching a young girl at Salem
was not an army ollicer, it seems,
but a private or a non-commissioned
ottii'cr. He was not one of
the men who were in Albany. He
is a villain, at all events, and
ought to be severely dealt with.
This charge in no manner applies
to Lieut. Holley, who was in
charge of the recruiting service in
this city. The latter has enough
sins of his own. His actions in
Albany were at least not those of
a gentleman.

A great treat is in store for theatre-goers
of this city in the ap
pearance of "The Hustler" at the
opera house Saturday evening. It
is a big company, containing all
the merrv comedians, all the fam
ous singers, and all the great
dancers who have made this great

Mr. C. W. Cowan, who is em
ployed at the Farmers Warehouse
cleaning wheat, was severely
kicked oy a horse yesterday alter-
noon. He was passing by a far
mer's team, when one of the heavy
lux! horses kicked him viciously.

was knocked several feet away
where he was picked tip insensible.
The extent of the injuries is not

financial success from the start,
it does not intend to await the
formation of public opinion, with
all its uncertainty, but proposes
to drift with the tide, and direct
that tide. Jackson county lands
are higher than lands in the il
laraette, by virtue of their reputa
tion. though their situation ia the

year? It takes heat to produce a

However I firmly believe that
ths peach crop can be made to
pay in selected localities in any
portion of the Willamette Valley.
Last year we met eastern buyers
in Medford, paving one dollar a
box for Rogue river apples to ship
to New York yes to Eu
ropewhere is the "Oregon red
apples?" If you raise such fine
peaches what are you doing to let
the world know it? Are you not
attempting to throw cold water on
the very means that proposes to
let other states know what you
can do by a thinned skinned self
ishness?. Such an institution as we pro
pose takes money, and we pro
pose to make the business itself
pay for it, and to do this we must
take advantage of tho "powers
that be" and cover every point
that will make it a financial euc
cess. We do not intend to let our
local prices warp our judgment.
Though a little indirect, the same
results will be attained in a less
direct, more certain manner.
Such an institution as is pro
posed can't be supported in any one
locality, and cannot be local, but
must have support from prominent
men in all the above mentioned
places. The best business enter
prises start in a email way and
work up, and this company by its
members gives assurance of its
success, and as we have to pay for
. i
the music in any event, no chances
will be taken, it is right that we
select the musicians. The finan
cial capability of r fits manage
ment cannot te questioned, and
they are not men to make failures,
nor have they entered with this
thing unadvisable. The w's lorn of
the course taken is apparent to
wise men. Local prosperities
atlect the parties more than any
body else, and rely upon it that
Albany will come in for her share
of thorough and efficient adver
tising. They haveAlbany's pros
perity more at heart than the
narrow minded element
that is remonstrating, and it is
our experience that the men
who do the most "kicking" are
those who have more patroitism
than either money or enterprise.
Lane, Marion, Benton and Jack
son are subscribers to the stock of
the company and its management
is at Albany to avoid traveling ex
penses, and as the center for such
operations all have the least ob
ject or ground for it. It is that
narrow minded policy that has
characterized Oregon and thwarted
her growth.
Oregon is one of the greatest
states in the Unior, and tbe
petty jcalouy referred to by
your correspondents and their un
tenable portion is low and con
temptible, and has not the sem
blance; of that broad and liberal
policy that insures slices iu all
institutions, more especially this

WHFAI AND HOP YIELDS.
The Oregon crop-weather bulle
tin for the week ending Sept f,
gives some figures as to wheat and
hop yields in the Willamette
Valley as follows :
Harvesting of cereals is about
over, except the late sown oats
and barley. Thrashing ia finiHhed
in many sections. The yield of
cereals has been unusually largo.
The quality is good fully
an average or more except in
localities where some smut
prevails, to no great extent how
ever in any place. Clackamas
county reports wheat yields of
39 bushels per acre and Yamhill
county 'M bushels in large fields.
Most counties have largo yields in
we'd cultivated fields ot lrom '.)' to
15 bushels per acre. Hop picking
is in progress. The hop lice have
done considerable damage. In
some yards fully 50 per cent of the
hops have mould on them, in
other yards no mould or lice are
to be seen. The bop crop ol Ore
gon was estimated to be 30000
bales, but since the picking has
commenced it has been found that
based on above estimate there
will not be over 20000 bales, at
the most of first grade hops. Fruit
of all kind and "melons, are very
plentiful, canneries and fruit
dryers are working to their full
capacity.
