GROWTH
OF TUB
SLOPE.
PACIFIC
The Bureau of Statistics has re
cently issued a volume which will
be read with gratified ainazement
It deals with the development of
the Pacific slope including the
states of California, Nevada, Idaho,
Oregon, and Washington, and the
Territories of Utah, Arizona, and
Alaska. It is possible to give
here only a vague impression of
the wealth of facts and statistics
supplied in this book, and of the
magnificent tribute they bear to
AnierUan energy. Their story is
almost incredible. The lauds
comprising these states and terri
tories, exclusive of Alaska conti
tute quite a fourth of the total
area of the Uaited States. Alaska,
acquired by purchase from Russia
in 1S57 at a cost of 7,--'00,o00, lias
already returned in revenue to the
treasury more than its purchase
price, and produced in values to
our citizens not less than fSo.OOO,
' 000 in the products oi the fisheries,
for the protection of which from
Canadian poachers we are now
contending with Great Britain.
If the people of the United States
appreciated the value of the rights
so gravely menaced there would
be a public sentiment in support
of the government so profound as
to compel the prompt and suffi
cient assertion of our rightful
authority. This lack of apprecia
tion with regard to the possibili
ties of our western empires has
marked every cjntroversy attend
ing their acquisition, and the
wonder is that we ever succeeded
in obtaining s great a dominion.
Jefferson was cruelly assailed
for the Louisiana purchase. The
Mexican cession was bitterly op
posed even after the decision of a
great war had made it ours of right.
Two years were spent in a bitter
fightT over the Alaskan treaty, the
opposition in all these cases hold
ing that the land would never be
needed and that it was utterly
worthless anyhow. British Co
lumbia was sacrificed to this fool
ish outcry, to the great and per
manent injury of our interests.
The Mexican cession ct at us
$.TO,(XK),000, or about 12 cents an
acre. We have carved from it
California, Arizona, Nevada and
, Utah and parts of New Mexico and
Colorado, and from about one
iwentn oi ine lanus uenounced as
sterile and valueless we have pro
duced 1, 800,000,000 of gold and
silver, and twenty times as much
in cereals, lumber and fruit. In
the five states and territories
which are the subject of this
recent volume the production of
precious metals to 188!) is shown
i i the table following. The figures
are almost beyond belief ;
Alaska, gold dollars, 3,836,000,
silver dollars, 11, 64.J, total, 3,853,
143; Arizona, gold, 10,895,500,
silver, 45,!iS!,3H3, total,5;,885,8!3;
California, gold, 1,132,572,000, sil
ver, 1,,3S!,343, total, 1,24!,91,
343; Idaho, gold, 18,!i30,000, silver
2,715,!i59, total 4l,45,!)5y ; Ne
vada, go'd, 76.8:51, '.KiS, silver, 77,
4 ,06i, total 154.238,028; Oregon.
gold, 2;j,y33,000, silver, 2.;s,787
total 26,23 1.7S7; I tah, gold, 2,
780,O(X, silver, 72,910,505, total
79,096,505; Washington, gold, 1,
627,600, silver, 474,9.!4, total 2,
101,934. Total, gold, 1,373,572,
468; silver, 24l,142,i;23 ; total,
1,9N,615,092.
These states, and those of the
Rocky Mountain country gener
ally, have been conspicuous in the
public mind chiefly for their vast
mineral wealth, of which this out
put of silver and gold is no more
than an illustration. But tl e fact
is, enormous sums derived from
their mines, their agricultural
products have been far more valu
able. Of the 625,000,000 acres con
tained in the Pacific slope, 369,
000,000 constitute Alaska. Of the
remainder much less than one-
half has been as yet surveyed, and
not more than 40,000,000 acres can
be called improved lands. From
these the agricultural results have
been obtained, and it will certain
ly surprise the public to know that
in the last live years the total
wheat crop alone has been equal
to the total product of silver and
gold, while in Oregon, which has
produced in twenty-one years $17,
513,787 of precious metals, the
wheat product has amounted in
value to $142,53,t27.
Englishmen seem to have a
penchant for American money
making schemes. It is said that
they are buying stock of all kinds
in the Wall street markut at
present. They will probably make
a goodly sum out of the trans
action as the prospect is that
stocks will advance just as soon as
the big crop commerces moving.
Portland is having quite a time
now over the effort to raise the
salaries of the officials. Salary
grabbing is an old game, but just
at present Jt'seems sadly out of
joint in Portland, for the present
officials were elected on the plea
of reform and economv.
Two thousand caoinet makers
in Chicago struck for eight hours
per day. The employers say
it is a dull season and so they are
glad that the workmen are laid
off. The result w ill be that the
men will lose several months
wages without gaining the adop
tion of the eight hour plan.
Missoi'iti farmers alliance men
are making strenuous efforts to
defeat the sub-treasury plan. The
great majority of the alliance men,
however, are heartily in favor of
that scheme, and will not be fat
igued until it has had a trial.
