THE RACE FOR roWER.
In the race of pre-eminence in
mechanical appliances, in the use
ful walks of human life there haa
been, during the last quarter of a
centu-y a constant struggle for
supremacy between water anil
steam aa the primitive power, and
ad a transmitted power electricity
is likely to usurp the place of all
others.
Indeed, as the Providence
Journal says, the present lias I t en
called the Electric Age, but one of
the results of modern research has
been to leave investigators in some
doubt as to what they really know
of the subtle science. The dis
coveries in this line has been little
short of marvelous, and their com
mercial utilization and develop
ment in lighting, heating, teleg
raphy, telephony, and the
transmission o! power have risen
during the past tifteen years to a
place among the most prominent
industries. Yet with an iucreaee
of knowledge comes a broader ap
preciation of the almost limitless
possibilities of production and
development now coming into
view. Faraday's belief, which,
according to Tyndall, was that
electricity was a substance, is still
a part of the scientific creed of to
day, and opposed to it is the theory
that heat, light and electricity are
each a mode of motion communi
cable to matter. Each school has
its followers, and he is a bold
electrician who will undertake to
demonstrate exactly what electric
ity is. Hence we have the spec
tacle of Thomas Alva Edition, who
stands in popular estimation as a
representative American investi
gator in tbejreal tieldof electricity.
stating upon oath in a court of
justice that he does not compre
hend Ohm's law. It is, f course,
not to be ass u mod that Jlr. Edison
is not as familiar with this funda
mental law as any other electrician,
but his statement suggests the
vast field of research lying beyond
our present knowledge, a field of
which the most advanced of living
scientists have obtained but the
view of promise. The sun is the
generally recognized source the
energy which has for ages been
stored up in the eaith in the form
of wood, coal and the hydrocarbons
and to its influence is no doubt
due the electric currents existing
about the earth. Heische! and
Ampere have attributed the in
candescence of the sun t'self to
electric currents. One of the
prime endeavors of the past few
years is to produce electric cur
rents direct from these heat furn-i.-hing
materials stored in the
. earth and endued with energy by
the sun. .The relations of heat
ami electricity, of electro-magnetic
radiation, of atomic and molecular
forces are being carefully and
patiently studied by scientists the
world over. In this country Mr.
Edison has been at work for sev
eral years upon a pyromagnetic
by which he hopes to procure an
electric current from the consump
tion of coal and without the inter
position of machinery of any kind.
Other researches are based upon
the constant changes in electrical
e-piipois'? whirl'., although silent
and unnoticed, are constantly tak
ing place. The necessity of
economy under the pressure of
competition, not let's than a
knowledge of theoretical blioit
tomings, spurs on investigatois in
this fit-Id. The conditions under
wl ich fuel is consumed in a boiler
furnace are such that from futeen
to twenty per cent only of the pos
sible energy of the carbon is con
verted into power at the engine.
There is a still farther loss at the
dynamo, and a well recognized
drop intervenes between the gen
erator and its work, either of
lighting or of motive power,
dependent, in a degree, ujon
ju-tny extraneous condition. lm-
ements in the utilization of
electric current have kept pace
with the broadening of the electri
cal lield and with the improve
ments in the steam engine, which
has been directly associated with
and in alarge measure responsible
for the cheapening cf electric
lighting. The life of glow lamps
has been increased by the finer
adjustment of current to the bear
ing power of the 'ilament, and the
advance in the lighting p..wr
per horse over has been increased
from six to tifteen, and Mr. Edisc n
locks for an ultimate product of
thirty sixteen candle-power lights
per horse power. The best lamps
are still fearfully wasteful of heat,
however, and 1'iof. Langley of the
Smithsonian Institution has
pointed out as the result of pro
longed investigations that nature,
in the case of the firefly, produces
a radient light w ith the use of only
the four-hundredth part of the
energy expended in a candle
flame giving the same light. In
the best form of incandescent light
the amount of energy wasted in
heat is said to be more than half
that expended in the production
of light. These attempts to direct
ly produce electricity aie not yet
commercially available, but there
is some encouragement for the
belief that substantial progress
is being made. A recovery
of three-fourths of the energy in
the coal in the form of an
eltctric current would be a
great advance, and its achieve
ment is not too improbable to be
hoped for.
It is hard to conceive of people
in any part of the habitable globe,
at the present day and age of the
world, starving to death for the
actual lack of food, yet stories of
that nature from Russia are too
well authenticated to be doubted.
