Artian Water.
We see that the city of Fann
ington, Washington, has let the
contract for boring an artesian
well, in order to supply tl city
with g'M)d drinking water, and
water for domestic purposes. Why
is it that Albany cannot have
good water in the same manner?
The expense would be very much
less than iu procuring a water sup
ply by any other known means,
and would five the bert and surest

would remove all of the disease
causing element mat is now so
prevalent. Let us have good

Sad Accltlant.
Siuslaw West: Wednesday fore
noon ol this week, while assisting
in clearing ground lor the new
Methodist church in Glenada
Uev. Thompson met with an acci
dent which will cripple hint for
life. He was hard at wotk felling
a tree and had just struck the last
blow with his ax and as the tree
began to fall he stepped back to
keep from being struck by it, but
unfortunately and inadvertently
in the direction where Mr. Henry
Nelson was also felling a tree, and
directly in the path of Mr. Nelson's
ax, which was being brought
downward with tremendous force.
The blade of the ax struck Mr.
Thompson about eight inches from
the point of the left shoulder, cut
ting a deep gash in the llesh about
six inches in length and severing
the point of the radius elbow
joint of the left forearm. The ax
was a very sharp one and had it
not struck his arm it would doubt
less have buried itself in his side.
The gentleman was at once taken
to Mr. Brown s residence in Flor
ence. Ur. t-loyd was called and
the wound dressed. The severing
ot the bone will necessarily sullen
the arm.
THE L0SX CABIN CLAIM DISCOVERED
The Gold for Whuh the M ntrs Lost Their
Lires was not There. However.
Everybody on this coast who has
had anything to do wi'h miners
has heard of the Lost Cabin mine.
Five men worked there for over a
year, so the story got p, and had
accumulated a large amount of
gold. As tiny were preparing to
leave the claim with their trea-ure
which had been exhumed from its
hiding place they wore attacked
by Indians. T.iree oft he party
who were taking the tools out of a
cut they had made wcra t-hot, but
the other two who were Dut hunt
ing the mules to pai-k out the
treasure e-iv.p-d. ()n named
Hurlbiirt wan nt-vi-r hrard of ami
is supposed to have eri- lied in the
mountains. 1 he other, I'mcy by
name, escaped to Jacksonville'
where he told the s.oiy of the
massacre and abandoned in -asure,
and where be lit. ally died without
having been able to guide) a party
to the claim, although he tried
several times but on accoutt of
weakness was forced to turn back.
During his sickness he was nursed
by a Mrs. Croxton to wlitmi he
imparted a detailed dt-scripti.n of
the appearence of the claim ami it
surroundings. Hundreds of people
have searched f r the Lost Cabin
claim since the uiassecrj of the
original owneis on November 5,
1853, but it hau neer been found
till a few days ago.
Mr. W. L. Long, who resides in
Portland says the O.cvoniau, and
who left last April to prospect for
mines in Southern Oregon, return
ed home last Saturday. He says
that in company with Agent
Matthews, of the Klamath Indian
reservation. W. Nickeisou, his
secretary, and W. S. Parrot t,
artist, he found the Lost Cabin
one day last week. They had ob
tained a description of the place
from Mrs. Croxton and a man
named Barneburg showed them
the cut excavated : o long ago and
now grown up with chapparel.
He says they left the agency on
the 5th in-tant and attempted to
cross Klama'.h lake to Ball's bay
in two canoes lashed together, hut
encountered a heavy storm of w ind
rain and snow and were driven
hack and then started out with a
team and went aiciind tin.- lake to
Ball's bay, and about half a mile
from there, in a kind at '"draw" in
the mountains, they found the
long Lost Cabin. They iund die
excavations mad-. thirty-live
years ago, and a Lost Cabin on
each side of it. They also fouud
the holes from which the treasure
was exhumed ready fur removal,
and the juniper tiee under w hich
the sacks were placed, w hich may
be considered lemarkuhle after so
many years. They did not iind
the gold, which is lot ro remark
able after so many yeirs.
When the party returned to the
agency an old Indian linding out
where they had been sa.d tie was
a witness to the mais.icre which
was committed by iCo'iio rivt r
or Molalla Indiana ami lie knew
pist where thesj Inliam had
buried the white men and seven
bags of yellow Mull' weighing
abeut 100 pounds each, w ith them.
Agent Matthews was to take the
Indian, w ho is a polici nun, and
a very truithful and trustworthy
man, and go out am', dig up the
gold, while Mr. Long returned
home, and is now living in mo
mentary expectations of receiving
a dispatch announcing the arrival
of the treasure at the KUmath
agency.
Changing Geographic Nam,
The government has undertaken
a much needed task in deciding
upon an authoritative method o,
changing geographic d names
whenever such alterations shall be
deemed advisable. About a year
ago the president appointed a board
of geographic names, at the head of
which is 1 rjt. 1. C. .Mendenhail
of the Coast and Geodetic survev.
The associate members, nine in
number, are all gentlemen whose
oflicial position end experience
have been such as to give accur
ate knowledge of the requirements
of the task imposed upon them.
As a result of their work three
bulletins have been issued, noting
a large number of changes in nom
enclature. The third of these has
just been sent out, and comprises
several hundred decisions render
ed at the request of the lighthouse
Board. They relate to geographic
al features upon the sea and lake
shores, and upon the navigable
rivers of the. United States, and
concern merely the elision of the
possessive form ol the name. Only
abou ta dozen of the changes are of
names on the I acilic coast. In
many cases then names so nearly
alike as to causetontusion, besides
uncouth nanus given long ago
which should give way to the
modern fitness of things. Great!
care, how ever, should he exercised
as name should not be changed
only when absolutely necessary.

There seems to be an error in
the statement that only foreign
insurance comoanies lost iu the i
recent Lebanon lire, for one of
Julius (iradwhol's companies, the
Oakland Home, paid Wednesday
to .Mr. l!ach, the full value of his
loss in that company to his entire
satisfaction, which seems to be
the usual custom of Mr. Grad
whol's companies to pay promptly
their lull loses as soon as they
occur. Therefore if you want to
insure your property well go to
.Mr. Gradwhol, who represents six
No. 1 insurance companies with
a capital of a hundred million
